How Many Times Did You Have To Fail Before Creating A Successful Business?

Hey everyone!

I would like everyone who has a successful online business to share in a paragraph or two on how long it took them to establish their business.

There is this ongoing belief that if its is an online business than one can just have it done and ready in less than a year. Everybody is obsessed with this 4 hour workweek mentality and while it is a good goal to have let it NOT make you delusional.

Online business is JUST like any other business - obviously it has its major pros but still a lot of work needs to be put in for visible results. Especially if you want it to be your main source of income.

So let us share how we did it and how it is successful now after how many years.

This should open up the mindset of newcomers so they won't fall for quick schemes as easily!

I will start it up - I started when I was 13 years old and found out about internet marketing then. The usual story goes that I spent ton of money on products and got scammed - though learned a lot. After about 3 years I had my first biz that was about web dev. This didn't last too long because of enormous amount of overhead.

After a few years of dabbling around and looking for more things I have found learned more that the key to a successful business is how scalable it can get - how much it can be extended with how much overhead. Pretty much the gist of it all. There are other components as well but this hits homerun for me.

So then after a few more years I have founded Avocado Plugins and started doing custom plugins for clients - this ones again was too much overhead and so I hired a team (at this point we have 6 developers!)

I then decided to change the business model and make it so that we only sell plugins we make ourselves - this way we provide value AND no too much overhead.

Since most of our work was for our clients we couldn't showcase any of the plugins so we slowly started to write our own plugins and putting them up publically and have many more too come.

This here shows another lesson - having a GREAT team is another must when you already have your business somehow established OR you can start it up with a team - either way works depending on your situation - use our judgement.

As you can see:

1) It takes years whether you want to or not - you NEED to master many skills because especially if you are the owner in the beginning YOU have to do everything on your own.

2) Having a great team helps a lot.

3) Building a business around your passion that provides value and also has a market for it - mine was software development and programming and entrepreneurship.

4) Instead of thinking about money think about how you can help other people grow THEIR businesses - and think about it genuinely - it is very difficult for us as humans to think about doing something when we have no benefit in it. BUT here is the beautiful thing - the more you help other the more money you make. But that shouldn't be your driving force - instead you should think how can I help these people make more money.

Now it is your turn

How many times have a failed ? Over and over and over and over, and OVER.

There is a difference between being a failure (giving up and quitting) and failing!

If you are able to pick up from your mistakes and keep going that's where it counts.

I've lost tons of money, so much money I don't even know where to begin.

But you know what? That has just made me sharper and if you think I'm going to quit ever, you've got me mistaken.

Keep going no matter what obstacles get in your way, no matter how hard it gets, no excuses!

    Fortune favors the bold.

Yep and it lead us to where we are now.

Also being a big part of someone else's rather large business for 7+l years gave me the added bonus of getting to learn from that company's mistakes as well.

Learned a lot of what to do and a ton of what not to do.

Always keep your eyes open even at your current job and watch how your boss handles their business. Guarantee you will learn a ton from their failures as well.

I heard stories of people spending 6 months to start making a full time income, others 2 years, others 4 years... but generally speaking you should think long term, 1-2 years (instead of hoping it will take you just a month).

It also depends on the resources you have (time, money, contacts), a mentor can speed things up quickly as well. Also if you waste time on bs make money fast formulas you're just keep running around in circles.

You know what the problem is? each one of the following is the problem with people wanna earn online.

    1- Get rich quick dreams
2- don't stick to one system
3- Do not learn from mistakes
4- move from one shiny object to other
    5- don't wanna work hard
6- don't want to pay price (in terms of money or time)

Try to find your interests , then see the potential whether it will give you some ROI or not . Learn while your work and stick to that basic principals which are same for each strategy.

Started out in 2009 with sniper review sites for big Clickbank launches. Made approximately $100 my first year

Spent the next 2 years bouncing from one shiny object to the next, spending hundreds of dollars on courses. Failed miserably at almost everything I tried because I never tried anything hard enough. Learnt it the hard way.

Just before I was about to give up in early 2012, I came accross a Kindle Course, went through it and immediately started publishing on Kindle. Thats when I really started being able to persue my dream of earning Full Time online.

Have created several Kindle WSOs since then, showing people how to create Kindle books and market them.

It is important as a newbie to learn the basics of marketing, such as copywriting, list building and so on. But whats most important in my oppinion is to stick to a method until you start seeing results. Give it some time and dedicate your energy and focus to it.

    Thanks Everyone for sharing

Started out in 2007 and it has been a true journey and evolution.

Failures ? At least 3 major ones with countless of small setbacks here and there.

They will happen no matter who you are or what you do.

That is just part of Life.

It took me awhile to develop a System that was non dependent on so many factors that I depended on before ( does that make sense ? )

But the failures really make the Successes that much sweeter. And you grow as a business owner and human being as a result of going through these failures !!

I didn't keep track of a "specific number of times" I failed, at the start: I just didn't earn any money until nearly the end of my 4th month, because I was doing just about everything wrong that you can do wrong, as described here.

Well I started in 1999. I have yet to make a consistent income. I have made a few thousand here and there over the years using SEO/PPC so I have had success in the past but I must have failed over 100 times. But failures should not be a set back. I'll keep at this until I am dead.

Failures...Let's see...I failed a lot the first year or two and didn't make much money.

My first couple websites failed miserably. I then discovered a site that was advertising paid surveys. It was free, so I signed up and found out I could make a few cents per survey and I didn't qualify for any of the good ones. Next, I tried my hand at writing articles for other people, only to quickly realize I couldn't make a living at $5 to $10 an article, which was the going rate on the site I signed up at.

My next failure was a big one. I spent a lot of time and not an inconsiderable amount of money building a handful of websites and buying software that was designed to build links to them by blasting articles I'd written to thousands of article databases. I blasted them with all sorts of links, built a bunch more by hand and watched as my sites climbed to the top of Google...I was right on the verge of making good money when one of the animal algorithm updates took out all of my sites in one day. Luckily, I wasn't relying on the money I was getting from the sites and it was just extra money I had coming in.

I finally discovered Kindle books and managed to carve out another decent little income before losing half of my books to one of the PLR sweeps. I'd been rewriting the PLR, but it was still too close to the source material because the books most of the books got the boot. I realized then that I needed to stop listening to all the white noise about "easy button" methods to make money online because every time I did, it ended up coming back and biting me in the butt.

I started actually researching the books I was writing and selling quality books and my sales took off as I started getting good reviews. I recently moved into affiliate marketing, list-building and selling T-shirts because I don't want all of my eggs in one basket and I've experienced my fair share of failure, along with a lot of success, in my new ventures.

Selling T-shirts via Teespring is interesting in that you fail far more than you succeed, especially when first starting out. I've literally had hundreds of failed campaigns that have cost me anywhere from a couple dollars to hundreds of dollars each before I shut them down, but I don't consider them failures inasmuch as they're learning experiences that help me get each niche I'm in dialed in.

In order to make it at anything, you've got to be willing to fail. Failure isn't the absolute end unless you give up. If you aren't willing to fail at IM while learning the ropes, you more than likely aren't going to make it.

Most Internet Marketers (and most business owners, for that matter) will tell you they've failed. Some not too bad, some quite a bit, some spectacularly, but they kept going until they found their sweet spot. As long as you learn from your mistakes and don't keep making the same ones over and over and over again, success could be just around the corner.

Were it not for my MLM, networking marketing, affiliate, SEO, and other projects, and my day gig to sustain me, who knows what would have become of me.

I have yet to create this successful - full-time - business after decades of trying. Whether they be through WSOs or other opps, I will not quit trying. I don't know what keeps me going. But the thought of quitting or giving up is still unthinkable and untenable especially now.

Just like previous posts, whether you've lost count or ignored how much you've tried, there is something that will not let this go, despite family, friends, colleagues, etc. One of these days, I gonna make it and that might go for you too. Forwhatitsworth......

Over and Over Again I always thought that making money online would not take as long for some odd reason. There is a Myth that Internet Marketing takes little or no work to become successful. So many people buy into this belief (including myself) without realizing the extra effort, blood, sweat and tears that must be applied first before things begin to become easier. It was a very difficult journey but I would do it all over again. The challenges I faced as well as the failures and lessons I learned have made me into the type of person I am today. I wouldn't change it for anything in this world.

I appreciate and accept my failures and the lessons I learned from them. They have truly put me into a position where I am stronger, smarter and patient than ever before. The lifestyle I have chosen was worth everything I went through in the past.

I think everyone's story is going to be different.

Are you going to have failed campaigns? Yes!

Are you going to have projects that just don't seem to gain traction? Yes!

Are you going to start some projects and sometimes not follow through until the end with them...most likely...for sure.

However, failing at any of the things mentioned above doe not make anybody a failure.

The only time you can ever be a "true" failure is if you quit trying...and NOT learning from your past mistakes.

The key is to Never, Ever, Give Up...and to finally settle on a business model that resonates with you the best, and stick with it.

There are tons of different business models to follow online...but deciding on one, and channelling all of your focus there, will be the most important choice you'll make.

      For what it's worth...

But if you're new in the game, or have only a few months experience with selling something online... get some experience on how to run a successful online business by selling on ebay. I was ebay powerseller and top rated seller within my first 90 days. Then i decided i wanted more control and more money, so i started my own site. I guess the lesson is stick to ebay lol

I would not call it "failing." I would call it "re-inventing."

Since we started in business in 1990 we have reinvented 5 times.

The first 2 were devastating losses.

With the 3rd one we were reinventing at the time of the crash and were back to 90% of previous income in about 4 months.

With #4 we saw it coming 6 months in advance, started the reinvention and never missed a beat; just a changed what we were doing.

With #5 we saw it coming almost a year in advance and actually made more money (2014) than we did in 2013.

The key for us was knowing that the business we had was still viable with a little tweaking.

The bad news is that we could probably make more money in another industry but here we have a solid core.

BTW, since #3 we have continued to build passive income from the business, so that if there was absolutely zero dollars in new sales in a given month, we'd still have significant income.

I think people quit too early when things go bad instead of figuring out what is broken and fixing it.

The best way to make money online is to conceal (tightly) what you have got that works and feign what doesn't work as something that is of value.

Arguably then, you basically have to be superior at lying.

    Just my two cents worth.
