Not really an exceptional domain at all. Would be worth more if you actually developed it and got it to produce some revenue. I wouldn't pay registration fee for it, I'm afraid. I wouldn't pay for any domain that was four words and started with Best and ended with Guide.

I could go on.

The number of words and their placement has zero impact on the valuation equation of the domain in question.

Saying that - if you get offered $50, you should take it. I hate to say it, but it's not a great one.

It does to me and since domain worth is in the eye of the beholder, my opinion was that to me it is worthless and that I wouldn't buy any domain with Best in front and Guide on end with four words in it. Worthless to me doesn't mean worthless to everyone.

I believe you may be making assumptions about my statements. It was quite obvious that your own statements were an indication of personal judgement, and not to be taken as a general guide. I was merely interjecting so as to avoid anyone mistakenly taking your preferences as the general rule. If you see what I mean.

What you're referring to in your opening sentence is actually known as the "greater fool theory of pricing." And you're quite right: the price of anything is worth what the next person is willing to pay for it.

Anyway - we are now left with no doubt as to your thoughts on the domain. I'm sure we all appreciate your input.

And we appreciate your input as well and no matter what words were used, we both seem to agree that the domain is not worth much.

Yes, I would agree with both of you. While my domain is really nice in matters of exact match in Google "best credit cards", it is kinda long, I know.
So, I'll just wait to get a decent offer I guess. Thanks

The OPs domain is BestCreditCardsGuide dot com. If you remove the first and last words, the domain would be CreditCards dot com, a 2-word name.

You wouldn't want to own CreditCards dot com?

If you read through the replies in this thread, you'll note that I was responding to this: "I wouldn't pay for any domain that was four words and started with Best and ended with Guide" In other words: the fact that he/she did not like the words or their placement was irrelevant. Again, in other words: the fact that someone thinks there are too many words and doesn't like them, bears no reflection on a true valuation. I've purchased many domains that looked atrocious but had high value.

I hope I've cleared that up for you, Steve.

A few years ago I sold one of my domains for $350. A guy emailed me directly and offered me $60 for it. Since he had to do a whois lookup to get my email address, I knew he was very interested. My domain name just so happened to be the name of his business.

So I confidently told him that $60 was too low and to give me his "best offer". He replied and told me that the most he would give me was $200. I countered his offer with $500 because I estimated that that was the most I could get out of him.

When he didn't respond within an hour, I sent him a final email telling him that I was at $500 and he was at $200, and to give me an offer somewhere in between those two figures. His final offer was $350 which is almost six times the initial offering. That's one way to negotiate when somebody contacts you directly about one of your domains.

This is super advice for anyone new to domaining. Nice post, Greg.

The portion in bold is especially useful. I negotiate domains on pretty much a daily basis and, over time, with experience, you do get a feel for what you can realistically hope to expect a party to pay. Sometimes, you know it's $200. Other times, you know it's $50,000. The trick is to never undersell your domain. If you have a doozy, hold onto the sucker until you get the right offer.

You can actually increase the value of your domain name by building the site first.

Hire someone to do all the graphics and designing for you. Then you can raise the price by a few $100's of dollars if not more.

Since you've said you already have proposals then select the highest bidder right away unless you want to focus on giving time to develop it or if you want to sell it to the owners of every site that is using the keywords creditcard in their domains.
