Offering "Locked In" Contracts vs "Month to Month"

For those of you offering services with some sort of monthly retainer, do you have more success with set contracts or just month to month?

Personally I have a lot more success when offering services as 'month to month', in fact here's a conversation I had today:

Guy: hey, I only have a small budget what do you recommend.
Me: we have plans from just $100-$200 per month
Guy: ok, I might go with the $100 plan then
Me: great
Guy: do you lock clients into 6-12 month contracts?
Me: no our services are month to month, so you have full control over your campaign.
Guy: ok, I will sign up to the $200 plan and see how it goes.
...

I find this to be the case most of the time.

I am of course taking on risk by not having set contracts, especially as this is my livelyhood, but I feel I have more success with this method.

Interested to hear how you guys do it though!
