Have you ever had a great idea for an App?

Have you ever had a great app idea and acted on it, i.e. had it actually created?

How did it go?

I'm in that position now - I want to get it built but I'm not sure whether it's still possible to make money on the App Store...

It would have to be a paid app, freemium wouldn't work and I can't do in-app purchases as it's aimed at young kids.

All advice appreciated...thanks.

Paid apps have a very hard time selling without a free app. You will have much better luck doing a free app with ads. Plus, if its aimed at young kids, how would they buy it and how is that any different from in app purchases?

Minecraft did not start as an app. I am saying it will be hard to sell a paid app if people don't know what they are buying. You need to have some sort of idea what you are paying for no one will throw you money just because you made an app.

Yes, it is very possible to make good money on apps.

As has always been the case, it's a matter of creating an app that people want. You may think your idea is great and your app is the best thing since sliced bread . . . but if there is no demand for it, if it doesn't serve a need or desire, it will probably not sell well.

Assuming you do create an app that others want, your challenge will be in the marketing if the app is paid and it's meant for kids. Obviously, you will have to market to parents (those who have credit cards). I would suggest you find and follow some of the most popular kid's apps to see how they are marketing their product.

Getting the app made is actually the easy part. There are many capable programmers and freelancers that can take on your project. It's a very competitive arena and you should be able to find many who are anxious to have you as a client.

Competition is extremely high in apps market. If you checkout the app stores, there is an app for everything (heck, I recently found apps for improving your vision). If you are a good marketer, or hire a competitive marketer, you should be able to cash in on this market.

Free apps are definitely the way to go for a "guaranteed" passive income. A friend of mine tried paid apps and made close to nothing. Now he's making thousands a month passively just from AdMob placement on his free apps, and it's growing with every little app he releases.
