Domaining for a Beginner

Hello I have recently been exposed to the concept of Domaining the aspects of flipping and cash parking. My professor made mention of doing it on the side and how much money he makes.

I have been doing research on the matter in all of my spare time my problem is that I am finding so much conflicting information, that it has been as much of a hindrance as a blessing. This place however is one of two names that kept popping up almost everywhere I went.

Which brings me to my big question can anyone here point me to a good resource with accurate information on the subject. I will be getting a school refund at the end of the year for around $250.00. However before I spend a penny I need to do my due diligence on the matter.

I am not looking to get rich or anything like that but investing my money and with a little hard work and time having some extra cash would be nice. I would like to thank you for reading this entirely too long post and for any and all info that you provide.

I looked around the forum I hope this was the appropriate place to post.

I've been "domaining" for about 15 years now. Let me completely honest... it isn't easy.

Now I don't use the same strategy as others & have never gone after "traffic domains" though I know many people are successful at it. What I mean by traffic domains are names that people let expire (often crappy sounding) but they have existing traffic & can generate parking revenue. I typically registered generic domain names with commercial potential. I also purchased such names from others. I know many people register local market names who do have success flipping names (Examples - DallasRealEstate.com or SanDiegoDentist.com)

If I were to invest $250 into domain names - I "personally" wouldn't register 25 names at $10 each which you pay renewal fees on each year. I would spend that $250 on a "pre-owned" single domain (or maybe 2-3 names depending on price you get) purchased at a domain name forum (dnforum.com, namepros.com), domain auction/listing places (godaddy auction, Sedo, Afternic, Freemarket, Flippa, Bido or even eBay), domain drop services like NameJet or buy contacting the owner directly via a domain whois search. I have seen some great domain names sell cheap at some auctions. Always do research on that name & decide if it truly has value. Experience (good & bad) gives you that education.

I have purchased domain names for $45-$300 that I have resold for $2500-$7500. I also have spent more for other names that have higher value. I also have names that I've had previous 4 figure offers on that when I list them at certain domain places that don't even get any offers even with a low start bid (I have reserve price set higher). Primarily that is because they get lost in the ocean of other names & potential buyers don't see the name unless they do a keyword search. Often you need to market that name to potential endusers & hope there is bidding competition.

Developing websites on domains & generating residual income should be a goal for you. It's something that I need to refocus on myself as my websites no longer produce results like they used to. If a website is producing $500+ a month for you... do you really want to sell the domain? Maybe get the site making $1000+ or more?

Adam Dicker (owns dnforum) has a new Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/domaincollege/ where he shares info so join up there as well. http://www.domainsherpa.com/ is a good resource.

There are some other domain related products (eBooks, software, video series, etc...) that may be helpful for you.

You will not find a resource with accurate info. What you find will either be written by someone full of hype trying to sell you something or it'll be written by a delusional domainer that loses hundreds/thousands per year renewing their garbage.

What value there is in this material will have to be applied against your own business sense. 99% of success in domaining is being at least somewhat familiar with the business climate of the niches that your domains belong to.
