Paid Traffic Vs Free Traffic, Which One Works Best For You?

Hello Fellow Warriors,

I have been in the Internet Marketing world for 3 years now and Learned So Much from many warrior Members and from other Forum members. I use both Free and Paid Traffic but I notice that my YouTube traffic which is considered a free method for me, have brought in the best results overall. This is my favorite source of traffic.

Whats your favorite traffic type, would you say Free does it for you or does Payed traffic takes the cake?

Generally I do SEO work to increase my site's traffic & page rank. I do forum posting, Article submission, blog commenting, bookmarking & so on. I preferred the do-follow link than the No-follow link. Because the do-follow link increase the traffic & Page Rank at the same time on the other hand the No-follow link increase the site traffic only.

I like Blog Commenting and Article Marketing because it truly works. Yea it use to carry more power years ago but its still a great way to get traffic. I have ranked sites up to Page one of Google with Article Marketing alone.

Social Bookmarks help greatly. I love using Social Bookmarks. I also helped rank other peoples websites with Articles and Social Bookmarks.

Free traffic is much better than paid traffic, as it does not contain any restricted boundary while in paid traffic contain restricted boundary, In free traffic variety of options are open as you can find anything from serach engine as well as you can give your advertisement by using free classified site as well as can get a signature link from forum posting and also it does not occupied any of the space on website, while in paid it takes space on website for any advertisement but it not require of any tactics, while for free it require tactics.

Free traffic is both the best, most responsive, most profitable traffic (article marketing traffic ) I've ever had, in any niche, at any time, and the worst, least responsive, least profitable traffic (search-engine traffic ) I've ever had, in any niche, at any time.

All the paid traffic I've ever used has been somewhere in-between those two extremes.

It could be argued that there's no such thing as "free traffic", really: you're just "paying" for it with your time, effort, energy and skill-usage instead of with money.

An interesting perspective. I think I tend to agree, actually, if I've understood you correctly. It's always been my perception that, in general, "paid traffic" is not as scalable as its proponents typically claim, while "free traffic" tends not to have so many restrictions.

Well, not necessarily: there are forms of paid traffic that don't require webites at all, you know? (I'm thinking of "solo ads" as an example).

Yes, this is true. You're just paying with "skills"/"effort" rather than with money?

No, sorry, but this isn't necessarily right at all, Vince.

You're just conflating "free traffic" with "SEO traffic", there.

There are loads of kinds of free traffic that have nothing to do with Google at all.

"Paid traffic" and "SEO traffic" is not a meaningful distinction between traffic-types. The reality is that traffic from search engines can be either paid or free, and traffic that isn't from search engines can also be either paid or free. Trying to classify traffic as either "SEO" or "paid" is both confused and confusing. The reality is that it's just a "category error".

I promote my websites with other means. I don't use SEO much but it does bring in some views.

You have a point about free traffic not really free as you do pay with your time and patience. I understand that and totally agree. But I would say that the term "free traffic" was geared towards the non exchange of money. So in a sense the term is still correct.

I agree with your statement that Free Traffic does not have such a huge restriction like Paid Traffic. Paid Traffic is a way to gain instant and sometimes targeted traffic. It depends on the circumstances. Do you solely rely on Free traffic or do you do both?

Free traffic is great but it is something that you cannot take full control, you know when Google releases a new animal in their cage your site's ranking might be gone overnight. Paid Traffic is something that you have full control, you can scale easily and received better split testing results with it and many other things. but of course it requires investment and knowledge as well.

If something is giving you results that you want right at this point then continue but take into consideration paid traffic and always build a list. You don't want to waste all the traffic that you are receiving everyday.

Thanks for your insight. Google's update did lower my websites ranking from page 1 to page 9. But 14 days later without any work, my website went right back to page 1. So yea it can be very unreliable at times.

You also pointed out what many people need to know. And that is to build a list. That will be the best traffic you can get.

    Free.

I push high volumes of traffic from both free and paid traffic sources but the systems I implement for free most assuredly overshadow paid. This is just the nature of the modern internet. The social aspect of it has totally changed the business landscape. 10 years ago, I would have told you paid. Now, you can blow $50K or more on advertising, but if you implement the right free traffic systems, some of which DO cost money to setup of course, then free traffic volumes and EPCs from them will always topple paid.

I completely agree. There's a whole new psychological dimension social has added to the game. Of course, paid or free doesn't really matter if your site doesn't convert. I'm still of the opinion that it's generally a good idea to test conversions with some paid traffic then scale for the long term with free methods once the conversions warrant the effort involved.

*Applause* Yes, its all about the right method and what you want to do. I currently use Paid traffic as I have sources that do bring in great results. But its all about testing and seeing which one actually converts best. I get questions all the time like, "How do you build quality traffic?" I start threads or point people to threads I feel will actually help them. Or if I have some free time, I will talk to them and help them find the answer that they need.

      Top Traffic Methods I use:

      * Video Marketing
      * Article Marketing
      * PPV
      * Solo Ads

For me I find free traffic looks best because it builds the long term sustainable visitor traffic.

PPC campaigns and solo ads do have their place but I personally find that they're too short term.

Solo Ads is one of the best ways to build traffic and a list. I think Solo Ads is the number one payed method that actually works. Solo Ads is the main traffic source for me as its really targeted. But their are some non payed traffic methods that in the long term, become powerful. Appreciate your insight.

Take the holistic approach and use BOTH!

When starting out you're not going to get instant traffic and SEO takes time to build up... So you could start with ads to test your site and in parallel implement off-page SEO with overtime reducing the ads...

However when using ads one word of caution... Make sure to read up on the policies... Google Ads are tough given the many policies which will kick you in the teeth e.g. info harvesting (because you have an optin form), user safety (you need disclaimers, disclosures all over the place), bridge policy if you are doing affiliate stuff....

FB works well.... However they don't like direct sales.. So think outside the box with creating quizzes etc like you see with buzzfeed... That can generate a ton of free traffic if it goes viral... So you may want to create different landing pages and experiment a little...

That said its definitely worth learning both ways and taking a strategic approach...

    Good Luck!

I have used both free and paid methods of getting traffic. Speaking only for myself, right now in 2014, I prefer paid traffic.

With paid traffic (either through online sources or offline sources), I can spend less time at my PC, and actually have some free time to do other things.

Free traffic, unless you are outsourcing your "free traffic" and paying someone to post on forums for you, create videos for you and post them on YouTube, distribute PDF reports with your links embedded in them to Scribd, etc. is usually very time-consuming. And if you are paying a V.A. to create your "free traffic" then you are defeating the purpose, since it is no longer free traffic. Outsourcing can work, but you need to find a reliable V.A. who knows how to do what you want, at a price that will get you a ROI.

With all that being said... for me, today, I find that simply buying traffic using PPC, buying ad space on other blogs and forums, paying for offline advertising, etc. is simpler and less frustrating (and is getting me a nice ROI).

Thanks for the share and you pointed out something that I wasn't really thinking of at the time. For those that have the time, go for it. For those that don't then paid traffic is the best option for you. But it all comes down to testing what works.

And I am just curious, out of PPC, Ad Space, and Offline Advertising, do you know which one does the most for you? I use PPC, Ad space, and Solo ads. Solo Ads are the best for my work.

  • Do both!
To have perfect harmony in your business you need the organic long term of free traffic and the instantenous business scaling power of paid traffic.

Very True. But for some people, one does work better than the other. And the ones that works best is the one your going to focus more on. But your right. Do you do both? If so, which one works best for you?

You should try it and see if it pushes your results higher for the best. Paid isn't for everyone but its worth a try. Its cool that your main traffic is from Social Media and Search Engines. And if your profiting greatly, that's a plus.

I think the key point to bear in mind is exactly what is meant by "works best". For me so far, 'free' traffic HUGELY outperforms paid traffic. In terms of how quickly you can get big results, scale up, etc then it's true that the free approach requires much more time and patience. But I have found that in terms of quality, free traffic is usually much more targeted, warm traffic and thus more responsive, whereas paid traffic, although quicker and scalable, is cold and much more of a gamble mostly.

Interesting point of view. But yes, it depends on what works best for you. I have found paid traffic to work great. I do however, find that the leads I gain from Youtube are a little more responsive then PPC. But Solo Ads top the charts in conversions.

It can go either way honestly, some people are getting much better results with non payed traffic then they do with payed traffic. So it depends on the business model and what works best for that person from testings methods.

Nothing has built my businesses faster than paid advertising. Nothing else even comes close. Not only can I build and scale a business without having to worry about the Search Engines, but I can get measurable results faster than any other medium.

That's not to say I don't get organic traffic or use Social Media, but they pale in comparison to my results that I get from paid traffic.

      Agreed.

When i first started out, i started with EZA and article marketing. And i actually looked DOWN on paid advertising. Sometimes i would write 10 articles per day and upload to EZA, only to receive nominal hits one day, then 50+ clicks other days. But it was never consistent. Then when Panda hit, the articles had no more purpose for posting on the site.

But with paid advertising, i get fast results, i can test on the fly, and it's pretty much predictable - and reliable.

Right, I see much better results in PPC and Solo Ads than in any other method. However, I do both free and Paid. If I had to choose, I would go with paid as its where most of my traffic come from.

Free marketing does work but not as well as paid ads.

I have written articles in the past and get very small amount of traffic from that these days. (mind you, I have a few 100's of articles).

Youtube marketing has worked for me on a very small level as article marketing.

And lastly, forum marketing is working on a smaller scale for me too.

If you want to get FAST and responsive results, I would look into PAID ads. Solo ads or pay per click are 2 of my favorite. They get you really fast results and you can find out really fast if they work well for your offer or not.

  • FACT: Money LOVES Speed!

There is NO such reality as "FREE" traffic. Traffic is PAID for in the form of Money or Time.

Some marketers are under the impression that there is a much lower risk in "FREE" traffic methods. That could prove to be the truth depending on the skill level of the marketer.

However, all things being equal, paid traffic delivers data much faster, giving you something to work with in order to optimize your campaigns.

The question is really not a surface level question, thus can't be answered on a surface level. There are so many variables involved.

However, there are Money Principles which apply to marketing via the web also. Money Loves Speed is one of them.

WARNING: To properly dive into paid advertising/marketing (I'm NOT speaking of wetting your toes) , you can count on having $25,000 budget for testing. This doesn't mean you can't produce a positive ROI after spending a few hundred.

NOTE: Some of the biggest teachers of "FREE" marketing online, do PAID marketing, and are secretly learning from some of the best Paid Marketers in the world ... yet teaching, and selling "FREE" marketing methods to their following.

DON'T FORGET: OPM - Other People's Money. Establish CORPORATE Create THE RIGHT WAY, and Leverage OPM, the RIGHT WAY ...

There is always a strategy behind success marketers, that rarely is disclosed to the masses!

Paid traffic without a question! It's fast and if you pick the right sources it's scalable once you find your ROI.

It's good to use a combination of both. You can always outsource your free traffic methods which can take time to start to generate results with.

I am seeing a lot of people go with paid traffic or Free. So its a close one here. I actually expected most people to say Paid to be honest. But Paid traffic does take a long time however, if done right you can get alot of traffic given you have the right method and time to do it. Do you outsource or use both?

Lately I've made the fateful decision to kick Google to the curb, so I use both. I rely heavily on social media, but most platforms have advertising platforms. You can also siphon a great deal of free traffic off of these networks if you know how. These days, if you can build a core group of fans, they will get traffic for you. For free.

Free traffic. It is all about how and where you target. There are plenty of ways to produce with totally free traffic even without long term SEO.

Paid traffic is the way to go. I always did SEO and then google kept doing updates and I could not run a business depending on google updates. I took to paid traffic and do about 10k a day in revenue. I am not just an affiliate marketer I run an actual business.

Paid traffic is a whole lot better than free traffic if you know what you are doing ( tracking and knowing your numbers). You can get results alot faster and have control over your traffic with paid traffic. If you don't know what you are doing it can be very costly.

There is NO SUCH THING as 'free' traffic. You're still paying... in the form of TIME. Time is, after all, MONEY. Think about it.

Both cost. Free Traffic Cost Time. Paid Traffic Cost Money. The question is which do you have more of?

Both Works Great for me. Actually for residual and constant traffic I am using free traffic methods like forum posting, Social Networking Site, SEO and use paid traffic to get some extra boost.

Paid traffic is the fastest way to get eyeballs in front of your offer/product. When I first started internet marketing, Bing and Facebook PPC as well as Solo ads provided me with fast results. Free traffic is also great but it's generally not something you can get on demand. Personal branding on social media creates organic traffic and it usually flows in slowly, but over time as you brand yourself more, you will generate greater levels of traffic.

Free Traffic like Blogging and Article Writing have brought me more 'valuable' traffic and leads that convert a lot better than paid traffic.

However, it has really been to hard to keep up with Google because of all the changes that they keep making.

I know that Google needs to keep changing their Algo's to combat Black Hatters but to me they are juts getting way to Picky.

Paid Traffic will always be faster and more 'reliable' but there still is a learning curve to 'Master' and you will need a steady marketing budget.

Paid traffic is expensive so make sure that you are marketing something that will pay you enough profit to keep on advertising just like a real business and your business will become very real to you!

I used to be ALL over free traffic, but I really love how quickly you can test things with paid traffic. Right now I am doing a mixture of solo ads, a little bit of Facebook ads and some other secret sauce
