Own Product vs. Affiliate Seller

When it comes to profit and creating a stream of income, would you say making your own product generally has a better payout?

I assume it takes longer to make your own product, but if it's good, you'll make money for a long time.

With affiliate products, the income is much more hit or miss, right?

You are correct It does take longer to get your own product to market. But ultimately you will make more money with your own products.

Do both..it is infinitely easier to sell affiliate products when you own your own products as well.

      Do both.

BTW - do both - you will thank me later.

In my case, I'm so busy with the product I created, I don't know that I have time for doing affiliate stuff in addition to this. I still hope to learn more about affiliate programs, and hopefully I can try doing something in this area soon. I have a strong PR 7 site. Surely it I could find a way to utilize this.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

Interesting post. For now, I'm going to concentrate on the affiliate stuff. I'll decide later if I want to sell my own product.

I think this is most sensible idea I have started out with my own products and wish I had started doing affiliate stuff. I would have made money much sooner. Now I have just finished my products and am about to launch them but have gone for 8 months without making any money if I had started in on affiliate and then done my own products i would have spared myself this.

Now im starting with affiliate stuff

Creating your own products for the first time takes longer than you think. It is a long learning curve plus there are a lot of hassels you dont have with affiliate marketing. Payment systems, support, people doing bad work if you out source etc

Product Creation does take time and resources but it is definitely more rewarding as your own products can also be used as bonuses for affiliate marketing and often will have an higher ROI if you are doing paid advertising. However, for a beginner, affiliate marketing, I believe.. is the way to go as you can take action faster and be off the blocks.

Product creation can be a hindrance to action as one generally tends to wait for the product to be "perfect" before launching it.

I completely agree with Russ. The ideal situation would be a blend of both.

It's really not a question of one versus the other since it all boils down to how much traffic you can get and how much of that traffic you can convert. I've never been a big fan of simply just doing one or the other since I've been doing both for a long time. In some niches I create my own lead product and follow up with 5, 10, 25 affiliate products for my back-end.

    I agree with Russ.

I always do both. I love releasing my own products but I find the flexibility of affiliate marketing fantastic. Plus I think PPC -> affiliate marketing is great fun..

call me nerdy but measuring, tweaking and testing while watching ROI grow is great fun, like a game where if you win you go buy some nice stuff!

Allen Says posted a few topics about this in the war room. I recommend you purchasing it just for those topics. There is a lot more but Allen's posts are worth far more than the price.

Here are my thoughts about selling affiliate products...

    Pros
    - No creation needed
    - Easy to get started
    - No inventory
    - No shipping
    - Order taking and fulfillment already in place
    - No merchant account needed

    Cons
    - Marketer may not pay, may pay late, or dispute your sales.
    - No way to track sales, you must trust other's sales stats.
    - Can't have JV partners
    - No control over refunds
    - Not as easy to build list of customers
    - Customers are not yours. Makes it harder to sell again.
    - Harder to up-sell, down-sell, cross-sell, etc.
    - Harder (sometimes impossible) to split test price points

If just starting out, you should cut your teeth on affiliate products. As you gain experience create your own product and incorporate affiliate products in your marketing.

Both have their pros and cons. Eventually I'd like to have about 75% own product vs. 25% affiliate products

I am currently doing affiliate marketing and I must say that I do agree with the need to do both.

Having your own product is not just about launching a product, it is also about experiencing what it means to create something that people would want to have and learning how to bring that product to the targeted audience. I believe not only it will be much more interesting, it is also prepare you as an individual for a more long term online career.

    Well, my 10 cents worth...

Doing affiliate seller is a bit tough one cause it need a lots of calculation and techniques to be applied. The same when you want to sell your own product but in that case the pressure is a bit lower than the first one.

    Hey dvduval,

until you have your own product do affiliate marketing.
after you have your own product - still do affiliate marketing.

Affiliate marketing can't interfear with anything. It is just like
having a drink while walking, it doesn't interfear with walking
and it makes you feel all refreshed as well.

Making your own products will be vastly more profitable, especially in the long term.

Promoting your own products helps you build your own brand. Promoting other people's products helps you build other people's brand. Over the long term, you can't lose by creating your own products.

      Yes exactly.

And you have a capital asset in your own products so you can sell a site for a much higher value.

You have teams of affiliates selling for you.

PPC is direct to your own sales letter, so you have total control over your sales letter performance as well as having no visitor dilution through a landing page.

I think PPC to CB is risky and not particularly profitable whereas PPC to your own product should always make money if you follow usual PPC practices.
