Default Best Way To Setup A Video Community Site? I don't know development at all! Help!

Hey Warrior All Stars,

I would like to build a video community site for a membership for my info product business. I am familiar with outsourcing and would like to outsource this project.

To do so, I feel that I need to know all the specifics about the creation of this type of a site before I choose someone to work with. I don't know ANYTHING about different programming languages or how to set this type of a site up.

I've had people on GAF mention joomla, CMS systems, PHP. I've heard all of these before but don't know what is best for this project.

So I would love to know what language you think this should be built in:

- Videos in my niche are scattered and hard to find. I want to create a video community where users can post the videos they find within this site.
- The concept is similar to tv show linking sites such as alluc.org that just act as a directory for tv show clips all over the web.
- The different with my community is that users submit embed codes from youtube videos, vimeo videos and any other type of embed-able video so that the video is displayed within this community.
- There is no uploading of videos to any server. All users do is take the embed code from youtube, submit it, give the submission a title and description and then its live.
- "Video submissions" can be posted under a number of categories for easier browsing.
- Videos can be commented on within the community (different from youtube / vimeo comments).
- The community is membership only. When customers buy my product, my processor will create new member info. Nanacast.com has setup an API to manage memberships. So when the customer buys the product they get an email with a custom user / password for the video community. Then when they unsubscribe from the membership (continuity) they lose access.
- Users can rate videos (10 stars)
- Videos can be sorted by highest rating and most comments in each section and for the whole community
- Users have a profile page where it will show all of the videos they have submitted.

How do I go about getting something like this built?

Any insight you can provide would be a great help!

Thanks in advance,

~Sean

Default Re: Best Setup For A Video Community For Continuity: Wordpress Or Custom?

Hi Sean,

I hope this is not just a "captain obvious", but I would go custom, and just outsource it. Jump on eLance.com, post your job in as much detail as possible, and I think you will be amazed how cheap it is to get stuff like this built.

A friend of mine suggested using wordpress because nanacast.com's membership system has a plugin for wordpress that manages the memberships. Here's what he said:

"We have done nearly this exact thing:

It's all about the Filmmaker

(excuse the way it looks i.e. Missing video photos etc, the guy running it right now isn’t that experienced)

Basically, this is a specific Wordpress theme built to handle video postings, with a rating/commenting system etc. In your case, I would build a social network on top of it by integrating Wordpress MU & Buddypress, then I would tie it all in with the Nanacast membership subscription. That would accomplish everything in the best and most cost effective way possible, providing lots of scalability in the future.

Buddypress is very new and not many people know how to work with it.

Hope this helps."

Do you guys think wordpress is a viable option or would it just be best to build it custom?
