Could you please to describe here how the google will crawl the Image writing?

Image is fixed. So if you write anything on the image, it is no easy to read by google. if any apps wants to read the image, it may need to use the OCR.

      Hey Vishwa,

Google can not able to read any images.. but if you put there "alt tag" then Google crawler will crawl that text which you have written in alt tag. Otherwise Google does not know that what you have written in your image.

    They say they can, anyway.

I think so, these days. The kind of software they use is getting better and better at recognising text in images.

A few years ago the answer to this question was "no", but they claim to be able to do that, and a lot of SEO experts certainly seem to believe them. So I strongly suspect that the reply just above is mistaken.

Google threats keep webmasters in line, until technology and innovation change to allow such a thing to be possible. Just saying, even if this isn't possible but others believe it is, then that will be enough to put webmasters on guard.

On a serious note: see above. Lexy has it.

There is no way their image reader is 100% accurate, so why even risk it? Put the important info in the alt-text. They'll read that. And if it is a lot of info that you want Google to be able to read, then make it text and not an image.

Google most certainly can read the text in images. For an example of how good Google's text recognition is, download their Tranlation app or their Googles app and use it to scan some text from an image.

Google Drive also has OCR capabilities that you can try.

When you consider the shear number of websites/pages in the billions and the amount of processing required for this task with repeated crawlers updating info then my opinion is no....

The technology exists - but my belief is that they are looking at images to see if it is offensive/sexual explict with breaking the law when crawlers visit your site...

One way to test this hypothesis is to do image searches... Every time you will see that the images displayed is largely due to file names ... and not the content of the image itself.

That aside Google's spam team do of course implement manual reviews/penalties...

Overall my best advice is to follow the "does it pass your grand-ma test"... If it does then your in clover... If it doesn't - seriously I would consider changing it if you are seeking to create an online business for the long term ....

    Hope that helps!

Is it possible? Yes. Are they? Very unlikely as the volume would be too high and with limited value to do across the board. I always use the alt image text.

I'm not sure what hypothesis this is intended to test. Will it test whether or not Google scans images for text? No.

My only point here is see if you can find images which either do not have the filename or meta data (alt image tag) associated to the term.. If you find some then it indicates Google is using this technology for the SERPs which I believe is not the case.... The only exception to the rule is back linking to images with anchor text describing the images which you can detect using various tools...

Either way I'm not convinced that images are being used in such a way wrt OCR because of the huge overheads to process and maintain such data... and I see no proof for it! Hence my hypothesis which is only a starting point ... Hope that clarifies ;-)

If Evernote can, and they do very well, Google can.

I am able to look up a pic of a UPS label by searching the last four digits.

      Just my opinion.

Evernote does this for premium costumers and for everybody else when there is no que of jobs for premium users content.
I doubt that Google would spend the cpu power needed for this if it didnt serve some very specific purpose. It might, I just dont see what it would be.

I'm sure Google can read most images.

Consider the algorithm that Google uses to read street numbers in Street View. This algorithm is so good it can beat most CAPTCHAs. That's better than most PEOPLE can do. Read about it here Google’s New Street View Image Recognition Algorithm Can Beat Most CAPTCHAs | TechCrunch

If Google can read those difficult to read CAPTCHAs, then surely it can read text that is intended to be easily read by humans.

As far as CPU power required to do character recognition goes, if Google sees a need for it, then they'll produce the CPU power for it. I'm sure they've tuned their system to be as efficient as possible.

Google bots cannot 'read' your images to know what words are written. The only way Google would know is if you tag the image or write words on the page. That's how they know now what the image is about, otherwise the content of the image is hidden from the bot and it won't be indexed for the words you want.

They can and do read text in images... Google books is built with their OCR technology... however, I don't think it's used on rankings yet or anything relevant for IM yet.
