Doing a product in flash?

Hi everyone,

I have a product I created a few years ago, but I want to repackage it sell it as a flash interface instead of html.

Please give me your inputs,

Thanks.

Why? Is there a benefit to the customer if it is done in Flash? Does having it in Flash make it easier for the customer to navigate and use?

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

    Well,

For what the product is then having it in flash would be more appropriate and yes the navigation would be much more beautiful and interactive than a normal pdf or html.

I create Flash products. Flash has great advantages and features, if you know how to use them.

    For example,

The user interface: Fonts, shapes, boxes, art/images, everything can be 'vectorized'. This means that no matter how big your window is, it looks sharp and crisp. No matter if you are in 1024x768 pixels, 640x480 or something complete way higher. Flash handles it.

Multi-platform: You will be able to run your product on Windows, Linux, Mac and soon iPhone. Your product will sell more.

Everything can be done on Flash these days. It is slower than a native program, yes. But it can do virtually everything. Unless you are wanting to create an operating system, Halo or something _very_ computing intensive.

But even there, there are ways to create code that it runs faster than the latest version of Flash (version 10+ by the way)

There are a lot of great libraries out there. And you can re-use them.

I don't have time right now to write in detail, but let me tell you that I've created real-time binaural beats generation and playback software(s), real-time music/audio mixing, 3D applications, Databases (encrypted!), PDF manipulation apps, I can save to files (encode data as WAV, OGG, JPG... And just for curiousity I can even create MP3 using 100% flash bytecode -no external libs at all-)...

Flash/Flex and related technologies are a great option for your next product. I love C++ because of the speed, but I'm switching to Flash more and more over the last years because it is what I've always expected: a flexible and powerful platform. Drop me a line if you need specific guide or tips.

    Thanks Gaby,

I rarely see flash products being used in IM due to the complexity and maybe a bit of extra effort. To me I find flash easier than the standard .pdf file, dont ask me how.

I used to use Flash in conjunction with Director for creating interactive games and such. Fantastic what you can do with it. Like anything, it's all about using the right tool for the job. If you need Flash to make your product work properly, then use it. But, if you can get away with something simpler, don't.

It's like - do you need the small ballpeen hammer or the large sledgehammer.

Yes indeed. Me too. I find it easier, specially with as3. It might not be the right solution for every product, but it works extremely well so far for me (And I've been creating this kind of stuff for more than 10 years).

I love to re-use components/objects (object oriented programming) in Flash/AIR.
