Local Business Directory - With all the recent changes is it worth it?

Hey,

Been throwing around the idea of starting a local business directory as there is not one in my local market. With all of the algo updates big G has been coming out with is this still a viable business model?

Pretty standard directory to start out with covering primary and neighboring cities with basic and featured listings with some banner ads available.

There seems to be a ton of options available some seem fairly new active and updated regularly from wordpress themes, edirectory, phpmydirectory, and so on.

Do well built local directories still capture organic traffic and rank decently in serps?

I'm not sure how well it works with organic traffic as much of mine is direct, but we do use eDirectory 10.3. I haven't updated to 10.4 but it is a major update that greatly helps with SEO. As always, unique content and high PR back links really help.

Local directories can work in some locations, its hard to forecast where exactly those might be. part of the issue is that there are often a number of entrenched sites, along with the review sites that you need to compete with.

That being said, i suspect that with enough work on your part, much of which is going to need to to be in the form of contacting businesses one at a time offline and selling them, you could build a successful directory. I think it might be a while before you see many results in terms of a profit.
