Strictly speaking, I think it depends on the individual.

But generally speaking, coaching (with the right coach) will "shortcut" the process for most people and is quite certainly the most effective.

Agreed! Spend the time and money to get good coaching from someone who is doing it now and can prove it!

All else, not so much. Been there, done that. Now working with three coaches and it's paying off...

    The poll is flawed.

College? That means education yourself.... at college.
    Self taught? = educating yourself
Trial and error = educating yourself
    Coaching = educating yourself
    video courses = educating yourself

No matter what, you will be spending time educating yourself. Lots of work, no one will spoon feed you.

What's hilarious about college students is that so many of them will sit outside of a classroom right before a test and whine about how the professor hasn't taught them everything. Yup! Because it's their job to do the learning.

To answer your real underlying question/poll, a person needs to choose whichever method best helps him learn what it is he personally needs to know and understand. That is what is most efficient.

Some cause-oriented hackers recently hacked one of my websites. So I researched what they're about and then donated a large sum of money to the entity they hate the most.

The next time they hack one of my websites I'm going to donate DOUBLE.

      LOL!

Agree! I think the moral of this poll is education!

But so far the trial and error is winning. I think you should change that to take action, fail and learn!

Obviously learning involves educating yourself, the manner in which you proceed to accomplish that goal is unique.

I hate to say this, but really, it depends. While I believe coaching is very beneficial, it's less useful in some areas (blogging comes to mind) and extremely useful in others (CPA, PPC etc.)

Books and forums are useful, but all the knowledge is worthless if you don't take time putting it into action, which is why I voted for trial and error. It may not be the quickest or easiest way to learn things, but it'll definitely end being the most impactful learning experiences. I worked a long time and had many 'failures', but the knowledge I gained from them is invaluable and I wouldn't be where I am today if I hadn't experienced them. Not quite something you can learn in a book or a video course.

College has been a joke so far for me. I'm thinking about dropping out.

I wouldn't do that if I were you...change your major or take it more seriously...especially if you're NOT footing the bill. It won't be a joke if you drop out, can't make money online, and can't get a job because you thought college was a joke and you bought the IM dream.

FYI I have two degrees and even though I'm self employed, I'm still happy I have the degrees.

Thanks for your advice. I've been talking to a lot of people (friends, marketers, and college counselors mainly) who have similar advice - finish it out. I really want to, it's just seeming like at the end of the four years all I'm going to have gained is a silly piece of paper I'd never actually want to have to use.

It wouldn't be a consideration for me at all if I wasn't doing fairly well already. Admittedly, I live with my parents (by choice) and as a result have no real expenses at the moment other than my car and my business.

I'm investing 95% of my income either back into my business or into the stock market (Vanguard) so I have a bit of security with that as well. I'm staying in for now, but it's always at the back of my mind.

Ive learned everything with self studie. Bought much books about marketing strategies, SEO, SEM, traffic sources, etc. Finnaly it took me around 2 years to make a steady income. Not much but definitely scaleable.

I dont like the guru mentorship shit at all. Id like to do the stuff I LIKE and not any stuff which recommends a so called "guru" to me.

If he explain a working model about PPC and CPA offers but I dont like this area of Internet Marketing, its damn bad for me. So first of all you have to know what you like and what not. And if you find something you have a passion for, then you will make the decision for yourself.

For everyone it's different, there's no one option - I learned through courses, ebooks, articles, video courses, free & paid.

Others hired a coach. Trial and error sucks it's the longest method, and Get a Degree like those business degrees I think are useless. The best way should be having a mentor.

The way I found my way was to get a coach you can learn from. There are lots of coaches and mentors out there, the one you want is the one that makes things really simple.

Putting together the foundations of the business is straightforward, and a process you have to go through for any Internet business model. So the first step is to learn the foundation steps & understand the processes in the first instance.

I agree that having mentor is a great way to move forward at a faster pace...because you learn from their trial and errors. However, many people starting out cannot afford the luxury of a coach...many are starting on a shoestring budget. Video helps me see visually what to do, but it isn't until I dive in and try to do it myself that it begins to stick. So trial and error have helped me perfect what works for me and what doesn't and it's helped me learn a lot at my own pace.

For me it's self-education and coaching, although the person who has helped me didn't see it as coaching and did it for free. Lucky me.

Anyway, I don't think it matters that much what form the education takes, as long as the information provided is useful. Some people learn better by reading, some by watching videos, others by listening to podcasts, etc. However, nobody learns anything from regurgitated, dated and bad advice.

So, the first step one should take is to learn to discern from bad and good advice.

Since i only got to choose one, i chose self-education as i'm a firm believer that if you can't learn something yourself and think outside of the box every now and then you won't succeed. No coach will make money for you, it's always you that has to do it.

That being said, trial and error also plays a vital part in the learning process.

I'd add another option to your poll: a job.

For some reason a lot of people around here seem to think that online businesses are really different than "normal" businesses (whatever those are) -- that there's some secret that needs to be found, after which untold riches will flow like cheap beer at a frat party.

The thing is that the same principles that apply to "normal" business (almost all of which has an online component these days) also applies to IM. When you look closely, the fundamentals of successful businesses really haven't changed much since capitalism emerged on the scene in 16th century or so. (Even if the things we sell and the tools we use to sell them have changed.)

So absolutely, I think going to school is a good thing. And yes, we should always be self-educating too.

As for trial and error, that's always part of any creative endeavor -- but wouldn't you learn more by doing more trial and less error? Working for an already successful company can give you that.

The same applies to coaching and mentoring. Sure you can pay for a coach, but if you're working at the right job for the right people, you'll get all the coaching you need -- for free. (Actually, better than free -- they'll pay you to learn!)

All that said, I'm not arguing that any job is as good as the next. There are good jobs and there are bad jobs. There are good bosses and bad bosses. There are jobs that encourage employee growth and learning and jobs that just try to suck as much out of their employees as possible. Moreover, as with so many things, what you are able to get out of your job largely depends on your attitude and goals going in.

Regardless, at least in my case, I learned a ton about business from the various jobs I've had, even if none of the jobs I had are anything like the business I'm currently running and even though admittedly sometimes what I learned was exactly what NOT to do. And I also had a real, guaranteed income on day 1. Good luck finding that with any coach, study, degree or video course.

I think the most effective depends on two things - time and money you have or are willing to invest. If you have money to invest and very little time then coaching and following their proven system is most effective. If little cash but plenty of time then reading these forums and finding some trial and error activities to match your budget is excellent. Report results, get feedback and tweak. Best of luck!

All of them will help honestly but some will help all around than others. Somethings you just don't learn until you do them regardless of how much you have studied or was taught how to do them. Coaches can only tell you what they did (which could save some extra time wasted don't get me wrong)

Degrees/Universities only give you theories nothing practical. Videos,Books Forums and etc will educate you on most of the information that you will need to know but the rest will be up to you. Trial and Error is hands down the most efficient if you ask me. It's like Driving a Car you won't really learn until you do it yourself and when you do...You'll know it 4-Ever

After giving the vote on the poll, I found the Coaching is the best way. But it may some costly matter. If you want to expense this cost, you can do the Coaching, other wise you can choose the video learning option. If you search on the search engine, you will found many video. It is a great chance to every newbie.

If I had to start again from scratch I would invest into coaching right away even if it costs $5K...!

Time is money and we basically just need direction; rather then searching around for the answer and following a ton of training, why not go directly to a coach and tell him to guide you in what and not what to do?

    That is my personal opinion

My top recommendations to learn internet marketing would be.

    1.) Get a solid coach
2.) Get in the game (take action and make mistakes)
3.) Focus EXACTLY on what you want
    4.) Never give up

It takes time to learn internet marketing and their is no overnight success.

Things take time, effort, work and money. You gotta be tough to make it internet marketing.

I'd stay away from coaching, you can learn everything yourself.

The only magic happens when the dollars flow into your bank account cause you created a profitable campaign, think of PPC/PPV, no coach is going to hand over his profitable campaigns, instead he only teaches you the concepts which you can learn for free yourself.

You will get results with all these methods. The only difference will be the amount of time taken to achieve the desired results.

Private coaching will give you faster results and when you want to improve things to fit your personality you will need to incorporate trial and error.

My first post here, but here I go; I voted Trial and Error. Why? Because it's simplest yet most effective way to learn something. There is Trial part of it which means you need to take action and error - if you are smart you will learn not to do the same mistake twice.

So it's all about doing something and getting something in return. Even if you make an error in your judgement you are still getting something in return - experience. If you just sit around waiting for some magic to happen you can forget about it.

You can do all experiments at your blog and look what are happening, what works or not. I prefer self education. Give a try and learn if you fail you also learn something. Don't stop till you get success.
