Hey I just sold one of my very first sites (YAY) however; I have no clue how to transfer it from Hostgator to their Godaddy account. How in the world do I even begin to transfer it?

Well first off, the domain has to have been registered for at least 60 days. Then you have to unlock the domain so it can be transfered. Then you send the new owner the transfer code and apply for a transfer through godaddy. You will get the emails asking to approve the transfer. Once that is done the name will transfer over in about 5 days.

Is it just the domain name or an entire site with html files etc? Many times the domain can be at a different registrar or host than the site files. I have many domains registered at one registrar and the associated files hosted at Hostgator. If that is the case you or the buyer will have to initiate a transfer of the domain if they really want it at Godaddy. Sometimes it is easier to just have the buyer create an account at the same registrar you have the domain with now and then "push" the name to their account. Then just change the nameservers to point to the buyers host (Godaddy). For the site files you could just zip them up and send them to the buyer or use FTP to transfer them.

Does anyone know where in the hostgator control panel where I can find to unlock the domain name?

nevermind I figured it out, just discovered my site is less than 60 days old. That really annoys me, I'll have to refund the money or something...grrr.

Are they just taking over the domain name or the entire site? If you have a free domain name with hostgator that came with a hosting account, it may have to stay there longer than 60 days. I would never register a domain name through a webhosting company. I have seen too many cases where they hosting company would hold a person hostage when they tried to move their site to another host.

  • So why not sell them the hosting too. Unless you are on a reseller account. Lesson learned... separate domain registration from Hosting.
