When it comes to keyword research, you don't want to ONLY input your niche into a keyword tool and then use the phrases that it suggests. It's not a bad starting point but you'll eventually get to a point where you THINK you are all out of phrases....But in fact, you've barely scratched the surface! So often I hear that niches are too saturated with highly competitive keyword phrases or lacking good keyword phrase....BALONEY! The solution is to start where few people start. Did you know that there are many resources where you can pinpoint keyword phrases that few ever take advantage of? The trick is to start thinking outside the box (or in this case, outside the keyword research toolbox!)....Let me give you a good exercise to practice with and then you can hopefully jump into other creative ways on your own. Whenever you research your niche, you need to start with key questions and try to answer them by using informative resources to gather your content. Ask yourself questions like: What are the sub-niches? What are related niches? Are there new trends within this niche that are breaking out? Can common keyword phrases be reworded in new ways? Think about these questions as you start gathering your preliminary research. In the Internet Age, there are countless resources online (and offline) that will make keyword research a breeze, but you need to have faith in your mind to help direct you properly. Let's start with one of these great resources - Wikipedia. If you enter your niche on Wikipedia, you will usually get a detailed entry about your niche that covers all of the bases. First thing I would do is print off the entire entry and then highlight those topics and phrases that are excellent candidates. Look at the hyperlinked words and phrases within the Wikipedia entry. Also look at the headings and suggested/related areas toward the bottom of the entries. Now think about what you highlighted.....Many of these item are ripe candidates that will ultimately become a part of your keyword phrase list. As an added bonus, think about all of the background knowledge you are absorbing about your niche. From this, you will often have new keyword ideas come to you on their own just because you start developing new concepts and connections within your mind. Do I ignore the keyword research tools? Not at all! I will use these tools are helpful to pinpoint the long-tail phrases after coming up with my list of phrases from my initial research. Still, I find Wikipedia as well many other resources to be my preferred starting points to come up with keyword phrases. Wikipedia is only one of many valuable resources that I use to start the process. Think about how you start your keyword research....If you're starting from the keyword tool at first, you are closing yourself off from other keyword opportunities. Think about what resources you can use right now to help you with keyword research. They're out there....You just need to use your gifted mind to tap into them. Again, don't ignore this starting step....It will make a huge difference! |

There's also another way to use Wikipedia to gauge the popularity of your niche.

Great ideas Michael, Even though you said to think outside the box, and think of resources other than the standard KW research tools, I just wanted to share my favorite KW research tool, which is somewhat out of the box... Keyword Questions Research Tool 'People often type questions into search engines. Now you can find these questions, answer them and get some great search traffic.' .jrd | |
