Default What is it about dog training?

I am not being overly picky or anything.. Okay I am, but what is it about dog training that seems to make it the perfect example whenever someone gives advice and examples about niche marketing? I even find myself doing it as well.. It's dog training this, dog training that.. Why?

"Everybody" has a dog, but no one in their right mind would come up with the idea to sell an ebook about it. Perfect example to get people to understand niche-marketing.
(Good question, Steve!)

Hi,

Another reason is that there are so many niches to develop.

Every breed "needs" a dog training book. How to train your German Shepard, Beagle, Spaniel etc.

Then you "need" specific types of training. How to house train, stop barking, guard, get along with children etc.

Then there is dog care, Home made recipes, bathing and grooming, treating ear infections, cuts/burns/bruises etc.

There are many more examples.

Then too, I remember some of the first products I ever saw in eBook format were about dogs. Maybe the concept got branded in our minds that, "dog" books were gold.

Steve, I was going to give it a try. Just wondering whether I should create 1 big site or different domains for e.g. dog training, dog care, puppies, etc

What do you think?

Yes. Not a lot, but I haven't done a lot of work (okay, I've hardly done anything at all) to drive traffic to the site.

I think Cesar Milan is the reason people buy dog training eBooks. They try the stuff he does on TV, scratch their heads when their dogs look at them like they're stupid, and then try to find a dog training eBook with advice that will work for them.

At least, that's the way it seems to work with chihuahuas.

Yes they have. At least they made money off of me and some of my friends who have bought them.

OK I know you meant have I/We made any money. No. Except.....

I can say this, the dog books I used to sell on eBay always sold out. I couldn't keep enough stockpiled. These were the little shiny hardbacks, "how to train your (whatever breed). They usually sold for more used than they sold for when they were new. As far as eBooks on dogs, not me.

Do you think that there are going to be more competitors in this niche than new dog owners coming onto the Internet?

Same with other popular niches.

Sometimes people forget that there are thousands of new people coming onto the Internet every hour searching for the same old popular niches.

This thing with dating sites being "hot" is nothing new. They have been "hot" since Rosiland Gardner ( she is one the first Super Affiliates on the web ) started her affiliate business with dating sites back in the mid '90s.

Everyday hundreds of thousands of people are turning 21 years old. They are getting on their cell phones and twittering something that has to do with being that age.

If you understand a "market" like 21 year olds and their trends and fashions what they talk about where they like to eat, what music they listen to...

Then you are tapping into a potential goldmine.

My age group is Baby Boomers. Retirement, health, looking younger...

There are thousands of people who are about to retire and are coming online to look something up that has to do with retirement.

That will continue to grow for quite a few years before it starts diminish.

So, it is very hard for some topics to be overly saturated.

Yup.

Dogs are pretty thick and can be trained.

Cats will just look at you and ask, "You talkin' to me?"

Just before turning around and walking away without a care in the world.

I prefer cats.

Because they heard some "Gu ru" do it, and lacking the creativity to come up with their own example(most likely because they're full of crap), they simply regurgitate what they've heard elsewhere.

I think I'm going to write an ebook about how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Then, whenever I need an example of a niche product, I'll use "making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich" as my example, and have a link to the ebook. I'll sell it for $1, and people will buy it just because they simply cannot believe someone would write a book about that.

Funny I was just thinking about marketing a product in the dog training niche. Must be karma.
I believe there are several reasons for the example like several given above. But, the best answer is that the guru's use it so this must be the correct one to use. And everyone keeps passing it along.

well, for one thing, dogs is a man's best friend.
not to mention that dogs or cats are probably the most popular pets around.

so it makes sense. we all know someone who owns a dog (or even ourselves) that has a poorly trained dog. so we definitely need such a product right?

They had to. Those paper towels cost $5 each. They didn't want you wasting them, with what they were spending on hammers - about $700 each IIRC. Lol!

I tend to use Poodle Grooming as a niche example. Also, woodworking - but that's my love for woodworking, and it's a big market full of examples.

It is just something simple that people can relate to and captures the imagination of lots of different people without just appealing to a small amount of people. I must confess i use it as an example myself from time to time.

It may be people like the dogs so much that they want to relate everything with it.People love to judge everything with there favorite one. That the human nature.

Frank Kern started off with a dog training product and he is hugely influential in the IM world. Also the phrase "Man's best friend" comes to mind!

I don't think anything is too old to promote - there are always new people coming online and not everyone has seen your emails, tweets, messages etc.

Cheers

My two cats have got me very well trained!

If they want to go out and I am in the kitchen rather than using the cat flap they look at me, then the door handle....and like an idiot I open the door for them.

Oh well..

Cheers

LOL. Aint that the truth.

I rescued my cat Sophie....7 years ago from the local shelter....apx. 2 hours before she was headed to Death Row.....aka...Dead Cat Walkin.

Sweetest little cat in the word until I busted her out of the joint.....

The second we got home....the ungrateful little **** repays my random act of kindness by slapping three layers of skin off my hand for having the nerve to try and pet her!

She sleeps. She eats. And then she sleeps some more.

Not once has this mean little cat ever gone and fetched me the Sunday Paper.

$7 went to buy the hammer. $693 went to the SR-91 Aurora.

Hmm - I just Googled that and found 900,000 pages!

Maybe I'll pass!

Try using "potty training" next time you need an example and see how that goes.

I dont know. Its one of thousands of niches. I know Mark Ling uses it alot because he has one of the most successful Dog Training sites out there. Maybe everyone is copying him?? I recommend coming up with a different example; dog training is certainly not the most profitable.

It's also a cultural thing. Different cultures have different uses for dogs. It could have very well been a cook book. "101 Ways to Wok Your Dog".

Lol.....just one thought, have you ever wondered why its always 10:10 o' clock on watch ads. Rolex, Omega, etc. Actually its the whole world. Perhaps its a standard...just like the "dog training" issue as a standard for niche tutorials.. Just a theory. =P (a weird one!)

Jason,
Thanks for the awesome tip for launching a million dollar IM publishing empire. that instruction book is government property. Government property= developed with your tax dollars. Public tax funding = automatic PUBLIC DOMAIN. Now, I don't know about you, but all of the bathrooms around here are missing a very important instruction and training manual...

Click here to send me $14.95 for the paper towel use instructions and the free bonus report.

That's a great story--LOL.

My "How to Use Paper Towels" digital guide is only $7, and includes instructions for properly recycling those paper towels, so it's green too, which makes it part of a hot niche! In fact, the free bonus report covers how to avoid using paper towels at all, which makes it even greener! First ten buyers can have their digital guide signed by A1 Gore!
