Buying websites on Flippa -- Is it a good idea?

Has anyone had any experience with purchasing an established website on Flippa and turning a profit? I have a lot of experience with website design and management, but I'm curious to see how taking over an existing website would go -- especially if it means turning it into revenue.

A particular user on Flippa that caught my attention is XeniaLike: https://flippa.com/users/684403/listings

Have you by chance worked with her? I don't want to take over a website for cheap and end up being penalized by Google or Amazon, as I'm not sure if going this route is a good idea.

I realize any marketplace online has its risks, but I'm just looking for a second opinion.

    Hi daviddifranco,

Have you done your due diligence (i.e. your online Google research) on the particular website you'll like to purchase?

I mean the more expensive the website, the more DD I would do on the site and also the seller.

As a suggestion, get in touch with the user over Skype and speak to him / her. Ask lots of questions.

And finally, go with your gut (and take the risk if you have to).

Ask the seller what the main source of traffic is.

You need experience in getting targeted traffic. Without traffic or increasing traffic, your purchase will flop.

You said you know how to make and design your own sites....then what you are lacking is the way to create traffic and generate revenue. I don't believe she is selling that and that IS exactly what you're missing.

Use your money and buy a very good WSO on getting traffic and you'll be able to make a hundred sites like hers each making $200 / month for you. Thank me later!

These sorts of sites are easily built using WordPress plugins like azon builder. On the Filippa sales page, it says that the actual profit is $18 per month for the site (which if true, is good for these types of sites!).

The traffic is from search engines, there is no special source. Google is not keen on these type of auto sites with thin content, so I think it will be hard to get traffic the way the site is set up at the moment, unless you can build your own traffic source.

Thanks for your feedback, everyone! Building traffic would definitely be my biggest priority. I already have an established presence on social media, but it probably wouldn't appeal to one of the websites that I am interested in buying. I suppose I could start out with paid advertising and see where that takes me.

Flippa can promote decent ethical sites... but be careful. As others have said... do your due diligence. That site does attract scammers unfortunately. Although that doesn't make Flippa a scam in and of itself.
