Internet Marketing While Deployed

Hey everyone! Ive been in Afghanistan the last 4 month and we got extended for another 5-6 months. I dont if many of you know, but a service members pay while deployed is horrible! We got a new mission and have a lot of free time! I was hoping to supplement my income while I am here.

Id really like to hear about ways to supplement income while Im here. A lot of people have rough starts because they dont want to invest money in to their business however that is not me.

I would really like to find some great people to work with and learn something new in my spare time!

Thanks!
Much Aloha
Steve

    Hi Steve,

It's going to be tough to provide great suggestions without knowing what you know, what you can do, your skills, knowledge, inclinations, etc.

Perhaps share that in as much detail as you comfortably can?

I have some experience in dropshipping. Not really a option here. I also know a little bit about SEO. I was also involved with programs like EN at one point. Id like to be a sponge and learn new things!!

I think the most important thing is to find something that doesn't have a tight time constraint.
e.g. if I am building a complex site they may give me eight weeks to do it, but if I am making changes to existing sites people want them NOW. You need projects where being assigned a mission suddenly won't create a problem.

For sure! Thats the thing. The nature of the overall mission in afghanistan is changed, specially after this year end obamas wants to only leave like 9800 troops here. The overall combat mission is ending, Now its more base defense. I have a 8 hour shift a day and most of time the rest of the day is mine! I have a lot of time and id like to make the best out of it ya know?

    Hey Steve,

There are hundreds of methods. It really depends on your abilities.

Given that, here's a general plan I recommend:

    1. Find out which methods appear to be working for others.
    2. Decide which ones you could do.
    3. Isolate the seemingly better methods.
    4. Research them here, other forums, elsewhere.
    5. Put together a plan of action for one method.
    6. Take action.

I hate being so general, but that's the best I can do for now. It's certainly a safe, general route.

Damn, I thought we were pulling out for good. I didn't even know anyone else was deploying to Afghanistan this year...or even next. I've only been hearing about units returning. And hey, the pay's better than if you're stateside, but I feel you, brother. It's still not great...especially with Obama.

Anyway, you can pretty much do everything except drop shipping as you already know. Remember:

    Sell services
    Affiliate Marketing
    Vendor Marketing

Choose a model and find a niche market. The military is a market all to itself and since you're 11B, then you have experience with survivalist training, firearms, self-defense, fitness {PRT/Crossfit}, small unit tactics {transferable to airsoft/paintball}, etc. There's a lot you can talk about, actually. And your target market will be fellow service members, hicks, outdoors men, and geeks who play airsoft. Make sense?

In your free time you can set up a website, create content, network, and buy advertising. This should get money coming in as you're deployed over the next 6 months.

Don't go too crazy with advertising, just put aside like 20/week and get more targeted traffic coming in.

This is a rough sketch, I know, but hopefully it'll get your creative juices going. In the mean time, stay safe.

  • Hi Steve

Just wanted to jump in with the first idea that hit me as I read your post. It might not be for you but you did ask for suggestions right!?

I think you have an extremely valuable angle you could use to draw interest and create a lot of buzz. The fact you are a soldier, based in Afghan is something people would be interested to read about. I am not sure on how much you are allowed to share or would want to, but a blog about the life of a soldier would be very interesting to people who value the work you are doing.

If you combined this with some form of E-Commerce setup promoting Army related products, either to other Service men and women or for people interested in survival etc.

You could also write an Ebook on some form of experience or knowledge you have to help people. Do you do much PT while out there? 50 Exercises that keep you fit while on exercise - as one example.

Like I said, it might not be for you and please don't see this as me trying to encourage you to exploit your position, that isn't my intention at all. I am full of nothing but respect for the work you do.

What I always try and tell service members that are not on the front lines, is your knowledge that the DOD provides you is valuable. What is it that you do or have done in the military that can be a valuable resource.

Do you do logistics? Maybe a course on supply chain management or logistics
Procurement? How to sell to the military
Travel - Taking advantage of military travel

If I remember correctly, one of my marine friends said when he was in the marines they had lots of mini "off the book" classes on things like, you will be in a bar fight at some point, here is how to win it.

Heck, it could be something as simple as a $9 course on cleaning your gun the military way. Sell that to the half of Texas and anyone not in the military. Don't neglect the thousands our government has spent on you...

Go buy yourself a tiny little samson meteor mic that breaks down super small and start planning out your course. Great thing about those type of course, unlike dropshipping, all automated (if set up right) and you don't have to worry about shipping product.

I used to be in the Air Force - sorry to hear you got extended.

Pick a niche that you are passionate about then build a list by putting up a squeeze page then promote affiliate products to your subscribers.

I second Brians response that is how everyone from the U.S.A should address soldiers serving our country properly.

so thanks from everyone back home

Brian to answer your question affiliate marketing is by far the best way to use your time to supplement your income while abroad.

So learn all you can about affiliate marketing, and then apply your new knowledge into action.

Good luck and thanks for your service again

P.S. If you need anything let me know

This deployment has been intense!!! When we started, we started off running! Running 2 patrols a day. The base we lived at was very expeditionary. We lived in tents and ate MREs the whole time! We were engaged i ground combat with the taliban on a several occasions. We worked side by side with the mongolian army. We closed the base about 2 weeks ago. Being one of 35 Americans to ever be there while the afghan national army took over. The 2 months there we lost many amenities such as mail, ac and heating for out tents, internet, laundry, supplies to clean facilities with, hot water, hot food etc etc. This was not typical, specially for a national guard unit.

Now the war is taking a 180. Ive seen the british and the usmc end their combat missions and start to effectively pull out for good. We are now at a base that is run by the italians and the spanish. This base makes you feel like your not even in afghanistan any more. They have restaurants, gyms, massage parlors, shopping, and bars (which US personal are not allowed to drink) not to mention I havent seen a woman in 5 months and there are italian and spanish babes everywhere. It is amazing how different our 2 military's are. The italians and spanish are allowed beards unlike us, i feel so baby face around all of them! This place fees like italy with everything being in euros.

Come december the NATO combat mission ends and the US is pulling out most of its troops. Leaving some 9800 troops per obamas pull out plan leaving 0 by 2016 I believe. Our role here is changing. We will most likely not be leaving the "safety" of our base. Now we are doing base seurity and days are significantly easier. I have so much time that I would like to utilize to make coming home better! It may seem like a lot to some, but horrible to others, I only make roughly $3200 a month when in afghanistan. A horrible wage for the job we do! So you can see why I want to learn a new trade that will supplement my income here, but maybe eventually help in transition out of the military!

Why aren't you using OPSEC. You should not be giving away details about your mission in Afghanistan on this forum. Be careful in choosing your niche.

I have not breached opsec at all. I have not given any specific dates, names or places. Our mission and what we did is publicly known. The pull out and draw down is world news. Rather a general description of my experiences and living quality.

Start with the basics. In Internet marketing the basics is called a sales funnel. Check out http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...step-step.html

#1 Pick an affiliate product or better yet a service like hosting.
#2 Set up a simple funnel similar to the one explained in the link above.
#3 Drive some traffic to your squeeze page. Look for the All-In-One Traffic Tips thread.
#4 Track everything and test new variations to increase opt-ins and conversions.
#5 Focus on getting highly targeted traffic and increasing your numbers.

The most important thing is relentless, focused action. Pick a good product and hammer the hell out of it until you see results.

Yes affiliate marketing is a great option to start. Aside from what was already suggested, I would advise you to research for a good free course online. There are tons of free courses on affiliate marketing. This will surely give you a good insight of what to do as well as the strategies to apply in terms of picking your niche or picking your products, etc.

      Good luck!

Find a niche that interests you and start building an email list to promote affiliate offers to.

Get a squeeze page with a free offer - people can download the free offer in exchange for their email address, and then promote related affiliate offers to your email list.
