Need Advice From EXPERIENCED IM About What Computer to Use That can Handle the IM Load?h

Hi!

I have been in IM for about 4 years, and have been using an HP laptop (Windows 7) all this time. As you likely know, all the images/videos/ files/software that we use everyday for our IM stuff really puts a load on the computer.

I only paid $350 for the laptop, since at the time it was all I could afford. It did okay for me for a long time, but lately I've been having a lot of trouble with my internet connection cutting out on me all the time. I know it's not the internet that is the problem - my husband's computer works fine. I also know it's not a virus issue, etc. I've deleted everything I could on it to reduce the load/memory/disk space usage, but it's still not enough.

Any suggestions on what I can do?

Or is it just time to upgrade and get a better/higher model? If so, in your multiple years of experience as an IM, what computer are you using now and has it weathered the load well?

And secondly, do you think as desk-top computer is better for IM than a laptop? Could it handle more?

Thank you in advance - I really have no idea what to get that will be better than what I have My husband has a MSI A6005 with HD Windows 7. He paid $600 for his, so I'm guessing that his would have done better than mine?

      Not sure how you meant to be helpful, or if you're just being funny , but the black hat downloads are not on my computer, that is a website. It's a selling method, not a bunch of downloads.

      If you have been in IM for a few years, what kind of computer are you using, and what internet provider?

      Those answers would be more helpful

    I am a bit of a computer nerd (I have an electronic engineering degree) and I would say that any computer selling new these days will be more than capable of handling all the work you do in IM unless you are creating the video and images yourself, ie photoshop or after effects or something similar. In that case you will want something with more RAM, probably around the 8Gb mark would do well if you needed to do image or video processing.

    As far as laptop vs desktop is concerned it is really personal preference as far as portability is concerned. Obviously laptops will are designed to be portable so if you like to work from various locations then obviously a laptop is your only choice but if you have a dedicated work space then a desktop is probably better as you will get more bang for your buck so to speak. The power and performance of a desktop will be superior when compared to a laptop of a similar price.

    In my opinion anything in the same price bracket as your husbands will do just fine for most if not all of your needs. As mentioned before if you do more power intensive work then you may want to look a bit deeper into the RAM and CPU but otherwise any computer these days will be powerful enough.

    Just grab latest intel core processor by dell or lenovo. If you need more gigs grab an external hardrive for less than 80$ for terabyte 1000 gigs

    The thing isn't really in your pc, nowadays all laptops can handle given tasks. Try to check your laptop for viruses, adwares, malwares with this utility: Dr.Web CureIt! — download free anti-virus! Cure viruses, Best free anti-virus scanner!
    If it would find nothing, than you should find local service center to clean your PC from dust, (cat) hair etc. - this is what really slows down your PC.

      I made the conversion last year over to a Mac Book Pro Retina. I got a full 16GB of RAM and 500GB Solid State drive. I hate to admit it but I can't see going back to a PC now. And with VMWare Fusion you can install windows 7 or 8 on it...

        Here's my 2 cent... if you work remotely like I do, then you'd appreciate having the freedom to run down to your coffee shop with your laptop or pop to the library to get some work done.

        So when it comes down to the questions over desktop computer or laptop it has got to be laptop.

        ..and I think I have to AGREE with OnlineStoreHelp! Having brought my MacBook Pro back in 2011 I haven't looked back since, still runs faster than any Windows PC I've had over year. Just saying tho, they aren't cheap!

    Thank you for all your replies and tips In my case, a desk top would do fine, 99% of the time, as I do everything from home. Not sure how quickly I would get used to it, since I've never used anything other than a laptop though... I guess I should try one somewhere before I decide to get one, just in case I really don't like it

    I will take all your tips into consideration, if I get around to it, after I have another computer, I might update this and say what I got

      Just to throw my 2-cents into this:

      As a consultant I've had many laptops over many years. I like the Dell brand but one brand that is by far the best, IMHO, is... Lenovo.

      I've had mine for almost 4 years now and it's taken a beating at the airports, several cups of full coffee being spilled on the keyboard, being dropped while running, and kid proof.

      I paid about $1800 for it (Lenovo T510) and I'd say the investment was well worth it.

      I have a desktop as well from Dell but I find having a laptop allows me to work while on vacations and at coffee shops.

    Get a Dell D630. Cheap, flexible, and reliable. I'm not sure what you're selling, but if you're a digital products marketer, this laptop will handle the load. Of course do your usual PC maintenance, but you want to choose a laptop that you will feel comfortable with. When you put your hands on the keyboard, you want to make sure it feels natural and feel good. Keep that in mind. Also not sure if you want a desktop or laptop PC.

    Check the connection quality.

    Also check if your laptop has a wifi broadcast intensity setting that you can turn up. Being a $350 laptop, they may have turned it down to conserve battery time.
