How legal it is depends on what you are sharing.

Next, why not use something like Dropbox?

They are a file sharing website.

you can't use a webserver to share files, they won't allow it
As said you'll need something like dropbox, google drive or rapidgator.net uploaded.net turboit.net

You can use a web server to share files, however it is more complex regarding the configuration and control of those files, the easiest method being you and your friends simply using FTP.

I would not however, recommend a shared hosting plan that is "unlimited" (there is no such thing as unlimited hosting)

In addition, you can store up to 100,000 Inodes on a soft limit and then have a suspension at 250,000. Inodes are essentially individual files. Look here - Inode Limits « HostGator.com Support Portal . So if you are storing thousands of small files such as images etc, then you will have a problem. If you are storing larger files you should be fine. Just keep in mind that pirated shit will only get your account suspended anyway so don't bother if that is your aim.

As said earlier, go for a dropbox or better yet, Google Drive if that suits your purposes

Forget hosting. Just use Dropbox instead.

Hi, I agree with the other Warriors.

Hosting is not suitable for file sharing.

You can use Dropbox as suggested, or use Amazon S3 instead.

With Dropbox you pay for a set amount of storage space, whether you use it or not.

Amazon is a pay as you go solution which can be financially beneficial in the long-term - depending on how much sharing you are doing.

Still some conflicting answers for you in here mate. Best you describe what kind of sharing and what types of files to get the best answer as all solutions are good depending on your requirements.

If you just want to share your files than I suggest you use Dropbox rather than web hosting. But there is a space limit on Dropbox, it is normally 2GB and you will get 500MB for each referral . It is true that in webhosting you will get more space.
