What Does it Cost to Have a Program Written?

Hi,

I've been thinking about this for awhile, and for some reason it never occurred to me that I could post a question like this in the forum.

If I have an idea for a program, and would like to speculate the cost of having it developed, where would I go to find out what it might cost?

Thanks.

Go over to elance or some other outsourcing site, and post the specs of the program that you want created... you'll find out what folks would charge.

The cost of development depends on what type of application you want programmed. Is it a web app or a desktop app?

You also have to consider the complexity of the application which effects how long it will take to complete.

One piece of advice: When I am looking for a developer I always prefer to get a quote with a guarantee the final price will be within a certain amount of the quote rather than someone who charges by the hour.

Also be sure there's some kind of maintenance agreement in place... I'm 100000% sure somebody will find a "bug" in the final product if they dig deep enough, and if you don't have any knowledge of the programming you'll need to hire someone that does... and you'd like that to be the same person that developed the program.. it just makes too much sense.

      Thanks for the quick response.

My idea is a web application. This advice will be very useful.

      Thanks.

    For software I suggest Rentacoder.

It is a minefield though so you need to study how to do this first. It is crucial to state the precise job in every detail, no ambiguities, deadlines, consequences of missed deadlines etc.

Also go for bidders with the most positive feedback and ask for examples of previous work.

The cost depends entirely on the complexity of the software, whether it is a PHP script or C++ compiled program and so on.

I have been to Rentacoder as well a few years ago. They have all kinds of talent on that site. Might be worth a look...

Gosh, folks. Why is everyone advising the OP to go outside the Warrior Forum?

There are Warriors who program. You can find them hanging out in the Programming Talk section and advertising their services in the Warriors for Hire section.

Let's keep it in house. Dealing with freelancers halfway around the world (which is generally what you get with the sites mentioned so far) is fraught with landmines.

I visited the Rentacoder site and registered with them. I'll keep the programmers here at WF in mind too.

        Thanks.
