How to build listing site? content is the hardest part

I'd like to build some listing site, however how to fill my site with enough content is the most challenging part. Without content, the site is non-sense
Appreciate any thought shared.

I actually tried once, and copied listings from other sites, but this is illegal, and I can not go further. So, I stopped.

Thanks

What kinds of listings are you talking about? Like craigslist type site?

Hard to answer without being more specific.

Yes, something like craigslist, but for some specific domain only, like job listing

What kind of list do you want to build?

If you're looking t get the emails then the best option for you is to post content that is relative to your niche. Make it informative, and unique. Have a tone that people would like to read. Give them some useful info, and give them some incentive to subscribe too. Perhaps some special freeware software relative to your blogs.

For example, I came across a blog that would teach you how to fill several forms for subscribing to different survey websites with one click. I subscribed, they sent me roboform software.
    Stuff like that works.

you can also use a popup requesting you to signup.

On a simpler not, you can simply place a sign up for newsletter box below your blog.

Thanks for your sharing, as stated above, I prefer to do something like "mini craigslist", in which the advertisements are posted from users

So what do you need content for? You just need visitors to post their "jobs" on your website, am I right?

Google classifieds scripts or craigslist clone scripts. From there you will have an idea of what to create.

Like most markets online its saturated so its gonna take some thinking to create something different or fill a problem people want fixed with the current sites available.

With a script and a new front end design that looks good plus some advertising dollar then you could start slow but other than that you're going to struggle.

Or you could just build an aggregate site which pulls jobs from all the major sites and puts them all in one place.

What about offering free listings to get the ball rolling? Not like it's going to cost you money, or that your going to lose money.

While this might not be the best, you could contact people that already have ads other places and offer them a free listing on your site? Course that might come off as spamming. Just a thought.

Yes, that's it. But as a user, if I come to website that there's no or not much updated content yet, I don't want to post anything there. It's like chicken & egg.

Script is not a problem, I can build or buy.
Pulling jobs from other sites will eventually come to result that: they block my pulling robot, or Google recognize my site content as copied one, which is not good in terms of SEO, or even worse, Google will ban my Adsense account(which is my most prefered way to earn money) due to that fact that my site content is auto generated - I saw this issue once.

Yes, I'm assuming that it's gonna be free at first for rather long time. But as I said, people don't want to post on empty site, or site with few content. I cannot pay money for long time to maintain a site without content & traffic.

My understanding is just like that. Looking for someone to say I'm wrong, so that I can learn more

Maybe I am wrong, but if it's free, what do they have to lose? And you could put it to them exactly like that. No? Only way you going to get listings is to try and get people to post, or get their permission to post their listing.

Have you even tried contacting people for free listings? Be right up front with them, it's a new site and you need listings. It's starting to get traffic, and you want to ramp it up. Just a thought

On the other hand though, it seems like situations like this, for a site like this to work, it might need to be jump started with some traffic. Like you said, it's the chicken and the egg. But if you can get the chicken, the eggs will come, or have a reason to come. No?

That or just give up on it. Don't see a simple or easy solution. You have to start somewhere or do something.

I have a feeling most listings sites get started by growing out of an existing site or community where you have a ready supply of traffic. Really hard to get a small-ads site off the ground from scratch. If I really had to do it then it would have to be really niche, or at least for a local community or city that maybe did not have a very good local listings site.

Who says you can't earn money as an eBay affiliate any more? My stats say otherwise
