So, this is what I did. Bought a domain name through godaddy.com, had it transfered to my hostgator.com account (which to me was a pain in the b**t). Yeah, there you go, I am already lost and had to call both hostgator and godaddy several times.
Honestly, they were both VERY nice (I felt like an idiot). Now, I found this info on the internet how to set up a site with multiple contributors to something that I personally would call a portal. Being a technical "no nothing" my adventure went on. Managed to use Fantastico to get my new domain on wordpress. Now, the challenge. Got totally confused, what user name and password should I use, "my first domain", my wordpress relating to that, my new domain (and separate pass words)? It is MOUNTING on me, lol. To my defense, at least I am TRYING! Take action, shut up the fricki**ng TV and try to DO something! Well, at this point, I'm lost but will try again. If ther is anybody OUT THERE that is willing to help a lost soul, please chime in or PM me, thank you, Eva Gosh, I do not consider myself stupid but this technology stuff is WAY over my head...

Congrats on the new site, you are well on your way. As far as the username and password, it really doesn't matter as long as it isn't something that someone could easily guess. Like you wouldn't want your username to be vikuna with the password as 2009.
What else do you need help with? John |

You didn't need to transfer the domain, but just point it to HostGator. This would have been quicker and less confusing for you. Oh well doesn't matter now.
You're doing well to figure this stuff out on your own out so keep going with it. Soon you'll realise it's actually pretty easy and you'll be able to create new sites very quickly. Andrew |

My first site was a wordpress 2.65 and it was only a test site. Then came 2.7 and now 2.8. The interface changes each time so its like starting from scratch.
By clicking around, found my way. Still confusing... As I get further into it, sure I will have some questions. At this point, just have to push forward and experiment. Thanks for your replies, I WILL make this work, lol. |

Hi,
Get used to having lots of usernames and passwords. That's the nature of computers. Don't use the same ones all the time. If you're struggling to come up with names and passwords, there are some tools around the net that will generate for you, if you're struggling let me know and I'll post the PHP I wrote for myself to do the same job. I couldn't really understand what you were having a problem with. Are you getting confused with what user names and passwords you should be using? Basically for Wordpress only site, you're going to have a username/password for the following domain/host, MySQL/database. Wordpress. So, probably a minimum of 3 different username/passwords. Your domain/host is where you FTP your files to, so your FTP credentials will more than likely be the same as your domain/host. I think that's probably confused you more... |

Nah, you're not stupid Eva, the technology is just new to you. You are taking action, and by doing so you will eventually learn the technology. Think about someone's very first real estate purchase. The entire process, from making an offer through closing will seem complicated and mysterious to that person, but it's "old hat" to you. This Internet technology will become "old hat" for you too. :-Don

That's just it Don. I AM a Realtor and I'm sick and tired of paying $90 a month for my template site. It does sit on Google's first page and I did all the backlinking myself. I was surprised that I could actually do that. Now, this site will have several contributors like a mortgage broker, a contractor, an insurance guy, a decorator, a home inspector etc. I will also break down my city by neighborhood and do a story about each division. Will make tons of video slide shows too, including entertainment, dining, public parks, basically the whole works. Will also include Rotary and other organizations for more eyeballs. Besides the technical issues, any other ideas what I could do?

Seems to me that you really know what you're doing as the plan sounds great and you've proven yourself. Have you considered *not* to do the technical issues yourself?
I'm writing this party to myself as I'm trying to convince myself to get someone else do the tech stuff for me, so I can concentrate on other things, as I'm a stubborn DIY and I spend hours and hours doing stuff, more and less just to prove myself I can (and I can, I work in tech/telecom) and also because I love to learn how to do stuff, and do it good. BUT at the end of the day I wonder if I could've do something else, as most of the time tweaking that WordPress theme, or get the colors just right and set some cool new plugin doesn't earn me much income. It's fun and challenging yes, and I like that, but in the end that doesn't pay my bills

I started using Roboform for all of my passwords and user names. In this IM stuff that one activity will overwhelm you in no time. Roboform saves me a ton of time, I don't know what I would do without it.

Make sure you are in HTML mode, not Visual Mode. Visual mode is for making things bold, larger fonts, centering, etc. HTML mode is the exact code to do what the visual mode is trying to do. Also - this helps me with remembering what I've learned: WikidPad - wiki notebook/outliner for windows Basically you type documents and quick link the words to details by putting them in [brackets] It allows for you to sort thousands of notes on how to stuff and it's searchable too. I have literally 3,000+ articles in my wikis on hosting, linux, coding, marketing, etc. It really makes you efficient. Also - to subscribe to a thread so you don't have to keep refreshing or checking back on it, go to the top of the thread and click "thread tools" and subscribe. Then you can get emailed whenever there is a response. I'm available to help with things just like what you are doing. I use a program called wink that does screen captures and teaches you step by step. So you could either hire someone like me to get over the tough spots, or have custom tutorials made that show you how to do things that are difficult and easy to forget. Here is an example of what can be done for you: http://fraze.biz/free/windowsupdate

Switched over to the HTML tab, pasted in the URL and it still did not work ! Went back to Youtube, copied the URL AGAIN, pasted it, and no, does not work !Anyone have any idea what I am doing wrong here? I have copied and pasted Youtube's URL's to the Warrior Forum and had no problem what so ever. Go figure... |

Hi guys,
just wanted you to know that I figured it out and I want to share it with you, lol ! Searched high and low and finally found the information. Here is what you do:When in Wordpress on your dashboard, click "Users", then click "Your Profile". At the top of that page is the wording "Visual Editor" and next to it is a little box where you need to put a check mark "disable the visual editor when writing". After that, go back to your post, open up another window for Youtube, find your video and copy the embed code, NOT the url. Then back to your post and paste it where you like it. Thada, done! Well, not quite, you need to go back to that check box and un-check it if you still need to add more text to your post. As far as the url goes, I've also learned this: by clicking on the icon for adding a video to your post, or actually a LINK, go to the top tabs and click on the one that says "from url", then paste in the url from Youtube and NOT the embed code. Also type in on the second line how you want your link to read. Finally click the button that says "add to post" and now you have a link. I hope this information was found useful for you, have a great day ![]() ![]() !
