Learned my first WP Lesson....and it hurt.

I am a newbie when it comes to WordPress and hosting sites. Up until now I had mainly used sub domains. Usually at weebly.com.

But moving on. I loaded a plugin (W3 cache). Then my page would not load (500 internal error).

Well long troubleshooting story short. I re-installed WP and did the one thing I always tell others not to do.

I did not back up my content!

Lost everything!

My page still would not load! Found out I had to delete a little file called ".htaccess". After doing that my page loaded....

So I lost everything for no reason. So the next time you go to try something new. Think of me and back up your site! lol

Good Luck everyone.

Does your hosting company not have backups? Many do, and can fetch something at least a few days back or further. Might be worth asking.

This where using a plugin that can automatically e-mail you your backups at regular intervals can be useful. Too late for you now, but maybe one of these will save you from similar heartache in future..

7 Best WordPress Backup Plugins Compared (Pros and Cons)

I have no affiliation with that site - it's just one of a ton that came up when I just googled 'WordPress backup plugin'.

More and more hosts are banning these plugins on shared accounts, as they use up too many resources. You'll need a VPS or dedicated to use it for all but tiny sites.

That's news to me - thanks for setting me straight. Perhaps one of the rare benefits of having chosen 1&1 for hosting is that they're too busy implementing their many 'features' (translation 'user headaches' ) to have got round to issuing a ban for this yet. If that's the case, it will probably be a while before they do

Your hosting company might have a recent backup. The last time I called Hostgator (a while ago now), customer service told me that they automatically backup stuff once a week on Sundays. I also recall customer service telling me that if they've got to provide you with the most recent backup they saved, they charge like $15 (not much when you consider the alternative).

    Good luck,
    Joey

There's still hope. Just like they said, you need to contact your host and ask to restore your account from a previous backup.

    Good luck.

I all else fails, you might be able to recover your site's contents using the Internet Achive Wayback Machine: Internet Archive: Wayback Machine.

Copy and paste from their archive to your new site. You'll lose all the date info, but at least you'll be able to get the content back.
