They haven't released much information about it yet, but from the sounds of it, it's mainly going to be a web browser only environment? While this is good, i think alot of people might not like it, people get use to their software, like office (pick your flavor). Internet marketing tools (tons out there - like micro niche finder etc). I am all for google, but not sure if this would really hit a decent amount of market share? |

Only time will tell what will happen. I think this is good news for everyone. I think that focusing on the need for speed and ease of use is really going to appeal to most internet users. If google chrome is anything to go by they it will please a lot of users. Phil |

Yeah I used to use google chrome and I bet it sounds good. I am currently using Mozilla FireFox so I think in my opinion it's better. I am so hooked on it lol.

It was only a matter of time.. Anyhows, I tend to trust Google. They are a company that has shown creativity and adding value to be their company's 'motto'. And that is something very tech-savvy and appealing to this era. And it will probably be better than Windows.. |

We're really coming full circle - from what I've read, it's more or less a thin client environment where the data and most of the "Power" lives on the server. There are a lot of benefits to doing this nowadays, with widespread broadband and wireless access. I doubt you'll see this take off in the corporate world anytime soon, but thos reminds me of the early days of PC's and mainframes. |

I think there will be a certain market segment that will go with the Google OS, but the "market" is large enough that they won't totally dominate it. Granted, while there are a lot of 'webbased' apps -- not everything (at the moment) can be done through a browser, and even if it could -- not everyone wants to do it that way. Microsoft is still a pretty large fish in the sea. |

MS will still be the largest by a large, large margin. Google may kick it's ass in "how many people on forums say it's better than the other" but Windows will kick it's ass in dollar bills, and that's where it counts. One day Google or Mac or someone might come close and potentially pass as the most used / most compatible OS but it's a loooooonnnggg ways away. |

Excellent job Google! Once again they found a market that's completely scattered and unorganized and now Google starts turning it into their monopoly field. And I'm not talking about operating system market, I'm talking about Linux distro market. Ubuntu can kiss goodbye to their plans to dominate desktop Linux market. I bet only server focused Linux distros will survive Google's entry.

The OS is aimed at netbooks. Additionally, Windows 7 OS (and I really don't like Microsoft), kicks all sorts of ass. I love it. |

The only "ass kicking" that matters is in the money department. It's fashionable to hate Microsoft, but in reality Google is taking marketshare from Linux as well.

Yes, it could kick Microsoft's ass to such an extent that Balmer would be completely determined to destroy Google. Soon MS and Google will be in a life or death duel and nobody will be able to predict what will happen. My guess is that both will be substantially weakened financially.

It's a browser running on top of the Linux kernel. Yay! What's it's selling point? Benefits? What does it implement that can't be done with either Windows or Osx? My predication: it will be used by OEMs as a negotiation point against Microsoft. They will negotiate a lower price for windows licenses and pocket the difference. That's it. Tyrus |

This could be beneficial in terms of cost reduction when purchasing equipments. 1. Google already has google docs....Online office productivity software 2. There are a lot of free web based data folders we can use..gigs for free 3. In terms of globalization..A lot of business can go global by having their operation adapt a web based solution and share data throughout the globe.. 4. eCommerce will be better with this.. No more licenses to worry about. Imagine the savings to corporations.. Although there is one major concern for me and it's "SECURITY" That's it just one concern... oMar |

I think that Windows is somewhat safe at the moment because it looks like Google will target the Open Source OS niche (Linux) By doing this they can get their foot in the door and gather the feedback and data needed to build a more robust, stable and sophisticated OS. I'm sure that many corporations and businesses won't be rushing to get this "new kid on the block" anytime soon, there is to much risk to take on a untested platform. |

kicking ass? it is not released yet. it is linux based. it does not compete with MS directly. it will take a long long time for google to use this to beat MS. to me, it more likes a response to MS's release of bing. when it comes out on the expected date, windows 7 should be out for 7 months already. will major PC makers support it? will more and more people give up windows and go for linux? nobody knows. so, kicking windows ass? I hope so, but too much uncertainty. david |

Most linux based systems can't find its' way to make serious profit, and they sure don't make it to the mass consumer... Hopefully with Google technology, marketing and proper strategy, it will ride the netbook wave and seriously kick ass! I always think that Windows is too "heavy", XP seems to be the best light weight Windows ever... and now if Google release the Chrome OS, I will be one of the first to try it out!!!!! Windows will rule the world for another decade, hopefully Google makes some share start from next year...

Microsoft supporter tends to laugh at Mac and other Linux based products... they have their reasons. Linux community just don't have a very good monetizing methods, while Microsoft build their system as a profit center, that's the different. Being noble-minded is very respectable, but won't create a positive return of investment, be it time, money or effort ... However, Linux still takes on 80% of the web servers, I believe they will make a come back to the desktop market... start from next year!!! |

Chrome OS is meant for Netbook alone even if they dominate by 90% ... i don't see how they are gonna kick any asses, its not meant for PCs, Laptops, MACs... and IMO calling it Google Chrome OS after heavily promoting Google Chrome browser is not a smart move in terms of branding ... Netbooks are usually for quick internet access they don't have much to offer offline ... considering that they already have services like google Docs, reader and chrome browser, its not that big of deal for a company like google to put it all together in order to come up with an OS.

As others have suggested don't underestimate the might of M$. There are still plenty of win32 apps which wont easily port to a web based platform and there are a distinct lack of true RAD tools for web development like there is for win32 apps which help drive adoption. Additionally in a commercial environment there is still alot of fear around security and relying on the 'cloud' as a storage and retrieval mechanism. Gary |

Yea, definitely a tad to early on the kicking asses statement. It's a great entry for Google into the market, but time will only tell whether they take a fair amount of market share. I'm excite by it because it means more competition and more competition means price wars. I'm all in favor of driving down prices.

¿untested plataform? Linux is very stable, and building on top of it is easy and fast. This Google OS will be a very good thing for Open Source. Google is targeting a niche (marketers, you know this is the way to go), a very good idea - they will dominate that niche and grow from there, the strategy is a master plan; google docs, chrome, android... it's now just a matter of joining the pieces. They saw windows was week in this department (big, heavy OS) and that they could position their new OS as the best option for netbooks, just brilliant if you ask me. Windows has never been the best OS, yet it has dominated the market, today people can compare and decide, both will have to learn and produce compatible software and applications... we all win! |
