Where the heck do I come up with ideas to write about this!?

So I'm in what I feel is a small niche (electric cars) I just can't seem to think of what topics in this niche to constantly write about other than finding other articles online and re-writing them, but nobody wants to re-read something that is already all over the internet. How do I come up with interesting original topics for this niche? Should expand the niche further into alternative energy?

I would think that people who are interested in reading about electric cars might be interested in reading the specs on some and seeing how the various models compare. or maybe interviews with people who make, sell, service, the cars themselves.

This is a huge up and coming market, I bet there are tons of information online that you could research, literally tons.

Its like school work buddy.. you cant think of it as writing some article.. you need to be writing reports. I personally on your subject start here: Electric car use by country - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia for every country there is at least 1 article to be had. you could link to dealers... you could do some research on the countries initiatives on the subject. how models vary in certain countries. etc.

There is literally TONS of material you could be writing that is not of the same ol same ol. it just takes some digging to put it together.

Research charging stations.. find someone that owns one and interview them.. I would find more than one. It cant be that hard to find these people, and I am more than sure they would love to spout off about their car and how they think they are saving the environment.

        Chilldy:

It's impossible to be enthusiastic when writing for a niche you care little about. I could write about xFIP v WAR as a baseball statistic in-depth, for free and with gusto, just because I'm nutty about the subject, but I imagine it would be a trial of endurance for most others.

I don't say that to discourage you. Rather, it is OKAY to feel winded when doing freelance writing. It is a price to pay as a professional. Once you've accepted that, you can get on with writing without necessarily loving your work.

Go to Amazon and search for 'Electric Cars'. I see a lot of available Kindle books. Download some of them, and start refashioning them into series of articles. Believe it or not, it is exactly the content your audience wants.

However, you can add a level of engagement by stylising your writing a bit or, for example, linking to other blogs that have written about your subject and quoting from them. The more you write without quoting/referencing others, the more your work will read like a dreary manual. And by piggybacking on the experience of others, you get to include the anecdotal stories that you don't personally possess.

I'm not suggesting for a second that you copy other people's articles, but if you look at the headlines of other articles about electric cars, that will give you lots of topics to write about.

If you do a search on ezinearticles for "electric car" you will get over 24000 ideas! That should keep you busy for a while!

Yes, you should. People often either go way too broad like health, or too narrow like electric cars. But also, create a USP regarding alternative energy. Who are you trying to write for? Companies? Individuals? Creating a brand and a unique selling proposition will also help to narrow down the market into a segment or niche that you can get a share of.

Surely not? Your "niche" is already a huge market (rather than really a niche)?

It might be sensible to expand your targeted traffic demographics into people interested in alternative energy, because of the obvious "green" connections, but not the niche itself. I would instinctively be looking for ways to narrow it, not to broaden it.

Libraries, newsagents and bookshops: as you so rightly say, there's little point in trying to offer re-hashed information already available online.

Set up a few Google Alerts focused on whatever keywords you may be using and see what comes in for you to write about.

Electric cars certainly isn't a small niche, you can easily create multiple sub-niches around your main topic.

Just check some of the other sites and see what they write about, then create your own content and put your own spin to it.

      Hello chilldy,

That is a Big niche. You do not seem to have much passion for it. Maybe I am being presumptuous but that is what I glean.

You can get info. and ideas at some of the Article Directories like Ezine Articles.

Also, nearly everything you write, has at one time been discussed on the Internet.

So do not let that be a deterrent . Just add your own touch to it.

Participating in forums related to your niche can help too - not just in giving you ideas and keeping you in the loop regarding what's new, but in building useful connections as well.

    Agreed.

How do I come up with interesting original topics for this niche?
Go offline, for example, to the library and look for relevant magazines - not to rewrite their articles but to use as springboards for new ideas to write about. You can review, critique, write an op-ed piece with your own opinions and ideas.

I did a Google search, magazines electric cars, and the results were rich.

Google displayed the following at the bottom:

Searches related to magazines electric cars

    electric scooter magazine
    electric bike magazine
    electric vehicle magazine
    smart car magazine
    hybrid car magazine

You can keep following the breadcrumbs for new ideas and topics.

How about writing on current makes and models of electric cars?
Write about the technology involved with e-cars: battery technology and research, switching networks/technology, infrastructure to support e-cars, etc.

Write about e-cars and related topics relevant to different countries. The state of e-cars in different countries.

Write about legislation and public policy pertaining to e-cars in different countries.

How about lobbying efforts and activities pertaining to e-cars?

Should expand the niche further into alternative energy?
Don't give up the ship. Stick with your niche topic because there's lots more to write about.

Interview the dealers that sells electric cars; interview people who own electric cars; what impact does electric cars have on the environment; how safe are electric cars; is there an electric car society; best cities to drive electric cars; where do you charge up an electric car; Can you drive an electric car on the highway; how do you maintain an electric car.

I could keep on but you get the drift. Think up questions that people want answered about electric cars and then answer them. Feel free to use any or all of the above for your blog.

    Good luck!

    What are you passionate about?

What keeps you awake a night?

What thought could you talk about all day with an interested person?

Deep within you is where you find the ideas to discuss with others. Things that you have learned throughout your life can help someone else.

What have you learned during your life?

What can you impart on others that can change their lives?

How can you help others accomplish their dreams?

When you find the answers to these questions, you have found your message to give to others.

    Man, oh man!

First, where did you get the idea that people don't want to read stuff they've read before?

Hang out on the WF for a couple of weeks and you'll see the same topics come up over and over again! Just read the articles that interest you, think how you'd have put it, and write your own post on a similar topic.

Secondly, join forums and Facebook groups where enthusiasts about electric cars gather and look at what they're talking about! What are their worries? What fascinates them? What techie stuff are they always wanting to know? What's coming onto the market?

Set up Google alerts for hot topics related to electric cars, electric car manufacturers etc. so you'll always be in the know - in other words, start becoming an authority in your niche.

You'll NEVER run out of things to write about, buddy!

    Hope that helps.

P.S. I know nothing about your niche ... but those basic principles apply everywhere!
