Why does Amazon Associates suddenly want my tax number?

Hello
I'm not a US citizen nor resident, nothing, I don't even live in the US.
i logged in to my Amazon affiliates account and there was a notice up there stating "we cant pay you untill you complete your tax interview....."
i usually get paid by Amazon Giftcard and its hardly $100 a month at the best. why do they want this information?
I have no SSN or such information. what should i put? what can i do? my $90 which was supposed to be paid these days, i did not get it for that purpose.
I'm realy confused and exausted. what's $50 that needs me to pay tax for it. Do Amazon gift cards include tax?!
Please help me or give me suggestions, i'd appreciate this
Thank you so much.

Did you contact them regarding this issue.
I guess they have better answer for you as what I know that Tax ID are not required for non-US citizen.

Yes, I did fill up the form. Don't know why this is done, but submitted the info. Still not sure why a NON-US associate should fill out the Tax form..

They asked me for my tax information I think about two years ago. I have not logged into my account in a while, so I don't know if I need to make changes or update anything. I don't live in the US either.

And they don't just need a number, it a 3 pages form that you need to fill each one and then print the page and sign it and send them back to them. it was not like this before. they used to require just a SSN number for US affiliates but i guess that changed too? now there's a 3 page form called " tax information interview"
      am i correct?

They need the information to submit to the IRS. They are only following protocol. The IRS is getting 30% of my money just because my country does not have a treaty with the US. And submitting an EIN won't change anything.

I guess I found something that might be useful to every Non-Us Amazon Associate.

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custom...deId=200663310

According to this any individual who makes more than 50 transactions in a calendar year is required to submit the tax information.

Look, it is business and businesses have a legal responsibility to collect such information. So, the first thing is to contact Amazon and not post something here. If you do not want to pay taxes or are not legally obligated then that is between you and amazon or any other affiliate network for that matter.

But please stop wasting time by asking these questions at a forum that has nothing to do with amazon and all the answers you receive will be speculation at best

I don't find this thread a waste of time, it is quite informative. If you don't want to read then don't, no need to lecture anybody.

I have had this as well. I've lived in the UK all my life and am not a US citizen.

I've been selling as an Amazon Associate for a couple of years, and also as a Kindle author for three or four years. Only in the last couple of months have I had a request for ID in the form of copy bank statements and utility bills.

After explaining in vain that neither banks nor utility companies send out paper bills any more because it's all done online or via email, and that I don't have any appropriate correspondence from HMRC (the UK tax authorities), I realised that

    a) Amazon only request this information now because some apparatchik in the Brussels bureaucracy of the so-called "European Union" decided to try and justify his job by making such a requirement; and

    b) it only applies to the FBA (Fulfilled by Amazon) program (selling your own products on Amazon and having them delivered by Amazon, in case anyone here doesn't know), and not to Amazon Associate accounts or anyone selling Kindle ebooks.

If you explain your situation on the appropriate page, an Amazon representative will telephone you and you can then explain your situation to resolve the matter one way or the other. If you're in the UK you may have to deal with someone with only a tenuous grasp of the English language but who will probably try and make up for it by being very courteous.

You'll need to ask an accountant in your area. Don't rely on advice from a forum of strangers.

Like they say, better safe than sorry.

Even as a non-us citizen you have to fill out the form. But you have to fill out one for people outside of us. Easy way to handle this is register at payoneer.com, I think you get a TIN number with the details they provide. Not sure though, maybe something to look at.
