How much have you made with Amazon?

Hey. I was just wondering if everybody could tell me how much they have made with Amazon? I've heard of people making $3000-$4000 a month & was wanting to see if anybody else has had that kind of success. Thanks.

    As an affiliate?
    As a Kindle author?
    As a FBA seller?

There are many ways to make money with Amazon. Did you mean in any fashion or did you mean a specific business model?

If you mean as an Amazon Affiliate then this is a good thread to check out:

Yes, I currently only do Affiliate sites for Amazon but I have been thinking about starting Kindle books.

I like writing fiction and from what I have read that is a good way to make money on Kindle if you write well and target a specific genre.

FBA seems like a good idea and there are some people making great money. The trick with FBA is that your problems are not traffic and a selling platform (being on Amazon) but finding low competition products that sell, managing the manufacturing/shipping or doing daily inventory runs for arbitrage. As well as a different kind of support and customer service.

Yeah. Really tough to find anything that doesn't already have a ton of competition you know. Kindle sounds like a good alternative & alot of people have them (my wife included)

Kindle can be a good source of income if you are prolific with both writing the actual Kindle product and promoting it. Promotions is where many Kindle authors struggle.

A fair whack from Kindle, and continuing to grow. Love Amazon - the passive income, the automated handling of tax and refunds and whatnot. It also does a good job of sifting the quality from the tosh. But be aware: you'll probably need to do more marketing than you think/desire if you want to make top dollar from Kindle.

Yeah. I was almost thinking about making a kindle book review site but I'm sure it would take alot of time and work in order to build it up to a decent rank. Love Amazon as well though and would love to be making 100's of sales a month with them

Ever hear of bad timing? I was a new amazon affiliate and I created a movie review site to sell dvds and amazons instant access. It was like the next day I got a email from Amazon cancelling my affiliate account due to Missouri's new tax law.

I would pick one niche and stick with it for at least 6 months before adding another 1. It is possible but it's all about getting constant targeted traffic to your site & that takes some time.

I only see people talking about SEO , the huge costs and the high risk of being deindexed by google isnt better to use Paid traffic to get fast traffic and laser targeted like facebook or google adwords?

Personally i like facebook since we can target the niche and very specific targeting, like interests, gender, age, etc
I think the best thing to do is having an authority website with lots of useful information for that niche, maybe 10-15 artickes with 1000+ words each, some relevant videos and about 50-100 niche specific product reviews.

Another path and maybe a faster one is to use an amazon bot like coolice ones, i think in this case some articles are required to rank keywords.

To me if i want to not be SEO dependent and use at least a mix of paid advertisment i think i need to sell $300 to $1000 price range products in order to a strong comission to give me a good ROI. For low cost items i think SEO its the only path and GOOgle can crush your empire in a minute.

                Good points.

I used to be heavily reliant on SEO before the Penguin update took more than a dozen of my Amazon (and Adsense) blogs from the 1st page of the SERPs.

I no longer rely on SEO for traffic / sales.

If you can get a targeted pair of eyeballs (interested in the product you are promoting) to visit your blog at an average cost of around 10 to 15 cents per pair of eyeballs and those curious eyeballs read your review / comparison of the product (and preferably a higher ticket product costing more than $200 or $300) then you should be able to get a ROI.

There are many traffic sources where you can pay 10 to 15 cents (or even cheaper) per visitor to your blog. Some of them are online traffic sources and some of them offline traffic sources.

Totally disagree with this. Lower priced items can be very profitable using Amazon -- and you absolutely don't need to rely on SEO to get traffic. Three methods that come to mind are list-building, social media and (most importantly) actually building a site that people want to return to and use over and over again. This last method is how GoodReads was able to become profitable enough for Amazon to want to acquire it for an estimated $150 to $200 million -- and I'd guess that 99% of the products (mostly books) on GoodReads cost less than $30.

Clearly for this model to work, you'd need something you can scale and the type of product that is conducive to repeat customers -- but I'd argue you should be something you'd be looking for anyway.

I agree. Social media can be huge & is alot quicker than SEO. Also, you can sell some high priced items but be sure to have lower priced items that you may sell alot more of to increase your commission rate. Books are a great idea if they are related to your niche & just one of the things that could really make you some money with multiple sales. Now if only I had thought of GoodReads

Hit the four figures a few Christmases ago, targeting a single, popular product, back when keyword-domains were helpful in the rankings.

Nowadays it's mostly pocket change with a couple of inactive blogs

I think nowadays you need to invest a lot of your time or/and money to get a decent return. A few years ago a keyword Domain with a massive back linking (lots of spam) was enough to rank well.

I remember that i had my first auto blog about the baby skin care niche with 2 SEO packages on it and in the first month i had sold 54 items that gave me a lousy commission.. i think $15 just to say at the time anyone could make money with Amazon. Now its possible but it will require a lot of effort that many people don't want or cannot afford to support it.

I think its feasible and bring a much better user experience but the marketeer needs to spent a lot of money on it or work really hard.

                        I mean:

                        - Great Niche Articles that are unique and an awesome content , this type of content should be added every month
                        - Lots of reviews of picked products, i think the more you get the more long tail rankings you will have.
                        - If possible make some Video reviews, even though i think to be a bit difficult to review something without showing it, unless you buy every product that you will review
                        - Then market it with Paid and free advertisement (social networks). My experience tells me that marketing in Social networks like Facebook, Pinterest are extremely time consuming... so if you pick the free path will take a long time to succeed i think...

Another thing i don't believe right now is that amazon affiliate websites are a passive stream of income... right now i think to have a good income , lets say 2k-3k per month you will need constantly to update your content.

I am still preparing my strategy for my first affiliate Authority website for 2015 , probably will go by the hard way

Another thing i think is to find niches or sub-niches that have a fixed commission that is higher the variable one, some of them give you 8%-15% so why not to attack those niches?

I agree completely. You really can make some decent money with Amazon but you need to stick with it. Ain't no free lunches in out business! ;-)

I use a technique to boost my Amazon commission rate. I sell some low-priced, high-converting "stuff" to generate a bunch of sales. This raises my commission rate on everything I sell including my money-making products.

We make quite a bit more than that with Amazon, but that said, it's really not about the affiliate program(s) you choose, it's about the value you bring to your users.

As an example, look at goodreads.com -- a completely different model than most affiliate marketers, but extremely successful. How successful? The eventually were bought by Amazon for an estimated $150 to $200 million.

The point is that it wasn't the fact that they were Amazon Affiliates that made them valuable (they actually were affiliates of many sites) -- it's what they brought to the table that made them valuable.

I found it hard to compete with a lot of the sellers because it seemed like all of the ideas i had were similar to the other sellers and there would be almost no chance of making sales.

I think you are better off selling on Amazon, don't bother with promoting Amazon products.

Create books, apps, video, or sell physical products...you'll make way more than little commissions.

That is a good idea. I've heard of people getting things wholesale & then listing them on Amazon.

I'm not doing too bad myself and can assure you that is is possible to be making in the 000's with Amazon associates. Look for good courses and learn and apply what is taught in them.

When I first started out I had the wrong mindset - I was promoting stuff that was only $30 or so and it was when I finally changed my mindset and hunted out the better products that I started to see some real traction.

A friend of mine created a website with about 40-50 pages, he also bought 30 high PR domains to make his own private network, total costs:
      • 40-50 pages of great content near $1000,-
      • 30 high PR domains a $200 each makes $6000,-
      • Content for the high PR domains about $300,-
      • Time spend to design site, build additional links 100+ hours so make that $1500,-
      • Theme + plugins about $200,-

      Total spend: $9000,-

His site is making in the range of $2000-$3000/month

      -----------------------------

A client of mine also makes these type of amounts, once again cost break down:
      • 15 websites with 30 pages of content each: $4500,-
      • 15* link building outsourced a $800 = $12.000,-
      • 15 days spend to setup the sites * 8 hours = 120 hours = $1500,-

      Total spend: $18.000

He's making in the range of $5000/month

      -----------------------------

      Now what about myself:
      • 20 websites with 20 pages of cheap content = 400 pages * $5 = $2000,-
      • link building for 20 websites a $200,- = $4000,-
      • costs for VA's to set it all up: $500,-

      Total spend: $6500,-

I'm making in the range of $1000/month and recouped my investment luckily.

      -----------------------------

For myself I seeked quite a few short cuts and my sites were pending way too long before I started the link building, on top of that half of the sites didn't receive much links as I forgot about them, and the sites looked ugly as hell to be honest. Were hit by multiple Google updates and required revisions and I also lacked heavily in keyword research (which was non existent causing me to throw 3 sites away literally as they were way too competitive).

On top of that I got hit by Penguin 3.0 as I didn't diverse my anchors properly and focused too much on only one type of link so most sites tanked. Three sites still rank though and they are good for $1k+/month and I don't see them tanking very soon so I'm still satisfied as I made my money back and now they make money in a very passive way, for how long, I don't know.

Still when you think of it, recouping your investment in only 6-7 months isn't too bad, especially when you do it in such clumpsy way like I did lol, though many will make these type of mistakes:
      • mess up with keyword research
      • mess up with link building
      • mess up with cheap garbage content

The others recouped their investment in 3-4 months as they took it a lot more serious then I did, they didn't tank either during Penguin 3.0

Though it's some kind of a failure it isn't a complete failure:

      1) The sites still make $1000/month combined, and that's all profit
      2) I tested 20 niches so I know which ones convert well, that's pure value
      3) I learned how far I can go with messing up by just looking at the sites that survived, that's value as well.
      4) I have a bunch of sites that I can still use as feeder sites to drive some traffic + rankings, once again valueable.

So it ain't all that bad.

      Conclusion

Yes you can make $3000-$4000/month but as you can see it doesn't come cheap, most need to invest 3-4 times such amount before they make it but once they reach it with organic SEO and survive some Google updates the income is as passive as it can be.

As for link penalties, the higher quality the website you produce the less sensitive it becomes to Panda updates but it's also less sensitive for Penguin penalties. The client with 15 sites that outsourced the link building solely to me survived all the updates from the last year and the quality of his sites play a very large role in that.

Great case study from Nik0, he could pad that one out and sell it as a WSO!

Personally I would go with less sites and build more authority I find that once I get about 40-50 posts up on a site the next posts get indexed in no time and if they are low comp keywords such as product xxx review they will appear on the 2nd & 3rd page of Google in days with no backlinking.

I also don't think you have to go overboard with your link building, A few PBN's from a reputable source [ie Nik0's] or your own PBN and a few social signals go a long way.

Onsite SEO and Optimizing your articles correctly goes a long way as well.

      Lol what?

Actually I do have a WSO in mind in the near future, which will cost only $1,- cause I'm setting up a writers platform (in development), a keyword research tool that blasts away all the other ones on the market (in development), a hosting company (well that's just a matter of renting a dedi and installing WHM) and I provide SEO services so an almost free guide to make money with Amazon, should be able to convert well as I service every aspect of site building, heck I might even start to sell complete sites.

      Solid advice.

Especially Onsite SEO instead of Onpage SEO is important, the well performing sites all had a decent structure, decent interlinking, decent category setup, and not just category 1, 2 and 3, but also categories based on Price, categories based on Wattage, or anything else that is applicable and useful for visitors.

That combined with solid inter linking of relevant articles is worth it's weight in gold.

Personally I haven't focused on somewhat larger sites yet though my plan is to build each new mini site on an expired PR3+ domain, whether it ranks or not is not my number one concern, I'm more concerned about setting up a legit looking hyper relevant PBN per niche and follow up with a dozen or so authority sites with 50+ pages each, very well build, decent content writers and those should bring in the big bucks.

That backed by a decent looking PBN that will also feed traffic can hardly go wrong.

Price outline for that, yes making money costs money, no way around that:

      - 1 authority site 50 articles $1000+
      - 20 site large PBN turned into money sites with link building: $8000+
      - Additional semi-whitehat link building: $xxx,-

So say $10k to spend on a site that probably makes like $3-4k/month.

in rare cases with excellent keyword research it can be done a lot cheaper though, one final example:

      - Site with 15 pages = $60 (yes that was a real cheap writer)
      - 5 blog posts at my PBN ($5 for me $30 for clients) = let's say $30,-

Then all of a sudden after Penguin 3.0 the crazy thing ends up on #6 for all 4 main keywords and makes $200/month

I decide to dedicate one solid PR4 domain to it and link to it and poof my keywords all increase to #2 #3 #4 and #4.

      Total spend: $290,-

      Site is making $500+/month now.

      Sometimes you get lucky

Amazon affiliate marketing for small websites will not give you more than $20 per month. For getting good income from it you website need to have good traffic. Below are my estimates.
    Unique Daily Visits Monthly Revenues(approx)
    500 $200
    1000 $415
    2000 $850
    2500 $1000

So you need some quality traffic for your website. about 2500 * 30 per month for generating more than $1000 per month.

Is that based on your own experience?

Let me give you some of my own personal experience ok:

      1000 pageviews/day good for $1000/month

Most of my visitors don't stay very long so 1000 pageviews equals about 700 unique visitors so:

1000 unique visitors/day bring in $1420/month, quite a bit more then your estimated $415,-

And that is with pretty poor setup sites that hardly presell in a decent way.

Now I talked with some friends and clients about how much they make per 100 unique visitors (which is VERY niche dependent obviously) but they told me they make $300-$400/month per 100 daily visitors.

So that is $3000-$4000/month per 1000 unique visitors/day.

Almost 10 times more then your estimate.

      Couple of reasons:

      - Your traffic is not targeted at all
      - You made up these numbers for whatever reason
      - Your site sucks 3 times worse then mine, and mine sure SUCK big time lol

Is it possible you set up some hobby / news / gaming sites that's pulling in lots of untargeted traffic? In that case your numbers could be quite realistic. My visitors are searching for keywords like "best product" "product reviews" and thus they convert pretty decent.

"It must be true: I read it in the Warrior Forum".

What utter nonsense this is: the size of your website doesn't need to have any correlation with your income at all.

There are people making large multiples of that amount from Amazon without even having a website at all. This thread is a bizarre mixture of genuinely helpful advice and completely fictional nonsense.

I wanted to add some value to this disscussion but sadly I am not experianced enough about amazon websites, like some of you guys here.
I do have 3 amazon sites. 2 generate a small income each month,(under $20.00) But one has been around for 2 years now and has grown into a monster. I have over 60 pages of good, quality content and have made some good money from it, (over $2000) and every month more and more visitors come to the site, I rank very well for some good searched for keywords, page 1 of google and in the top 3 spots. This has taken 2 years to get there. I didn't do a huge amount of backlinking, i did pay someone on the forum a long time ago to start it of backlinking package, then I went and set up in differant names to the site, 2 video pages, 2 facebook pages, 3 pinterest accounts all with links to the site. This I feel this might of helped me a little bit.
I am also only selling a low priced item though, under $30, but the sales keep coming in month after month.

  • I'm not going to lie and say that I have made thousands upon millions on Amazon, but I do make a great consistent income from their affiliate program. Contrary to popular belief, it is always about making lots of sales and simply just getting as many high priced products sold. I also make great cash in this untapped niche that a lot of people are ignoring, and even though I may only make $2 or $4 for every sale, the amounts of sales I get for that one product is astounding.

so just because some people say to sell high priced items online, there is good money to be earned selling cheaper products too.

If I could get a piece of all that I have spent with the big A over the years that would be a great income stream in itself!

I have seen Amazon products have good conversion rate than any other digital product. I have found it around 30% to 50%. Well it is my personal experience.

Kindle is a great way to make some money. Please remember to keep cash in reserve. Taxes are a pain. Making several thousand a year from one e-book is easy. Fiverr is a great place to get a cover. Also, you have up front costs that are near zero. Gotta love amazon. It is win win.

I agree & would rate it as one of the best ways to make money online if you can get enough people to look at it. Seems like you just need to have high end and low end products in order to raise your commission rates. Haven't gotten into the kindle books yet as most of them are under $3 but have got some physical books in my store & was hoping this would give them enough interest in order to search for other things

Currently about 3k-5k per month here on a good money site I created at the beginning of last year.

I also had a really good churn and burn method going for awhile that earned me about 2k per month, but it doesn't work anymore thanks to a Google Update haha.

Yeah. Good to see that it's working out for you & it really is just a matter of time if you continue to add good content to your site. Better to use white hat methods to build your backlinks though & then you shouldn't have to worry about any problems when Google decides to clear out all of the bad ones

Amazon changed its affiliate model in a way that eliminated most of my Amazon income, previous to this I was running a couple hundred bucks a month, (just set it and forget it publications) but with the way they have it setup now, if the buyer does not make an almost immediate purchase you do not see any kind of commission. When that happened I went back to ebay and have been doing very well with Ebay, I still promote Amazon but have not seen sales, its possible they may see a reduction in affiliate promotion and change the system so that it is more fair, but so far, it looks like Amazon is Dead for your average affiliate marketer, (average meaning hobby)

Hey. I was thinking that if they added an item to their cart, that you could still get paid up to 90 days after they add it. I would say it is all about your niche & having something that they can't run down the street & buy. I still believe in Amazon & have seen proof of the income possible from what other people are making a month

Great thread, thanks to all for info. However, I read elsewhere online that Google (at least in the past) penalized review websites that had a lot of affiliate links on their site. Can anybody here confirm this or give an opinion about it? If so, how do you guys market your affiliate links, if at all? What's the trick?

    Thanks in advance

The way I get around this is twofold:
      1. I don't have a review site with lots of affiliate links
      2. I get the vast bulk of my traffic from other sources than search engines

Not sure how you meant that they are penalized for affiliate links? If they are cluttered with ads & don't really have any good content in them, I can see them doing that. If you have a good design for your site, with just a few ads & amazon links I wouldn't think you would have anything to worry about though

Yeah. I think that is why they say to focus on one site & imagine if you had the content of all 4 in one!

What niche are you using? Do you have a website? You just have to find a way to add a store into your site. I'm also using adsense, autoresponder, amazon, clickbank, hosting, seo services & a keyword ranker

Been dropshipping on amazon since April. Things have really picked up last two months (of course, Christmas season). 9K last month on ebay and amazon; 2/3 from amazon. Next year will look at white labeling product from China. I strongly recommend selling physical products on amazon.
