What do you guys do to avoid spam complaints?

I've been trying to think of ways to remind users that they signed up for my list. I decided to put this at the very top of every newsletter:

You requested that we keep in contact with you on November 19, 2014 from http://XXXXXXX.com. Thank you for choosing to subscribe. If you don't find this information helpful, you can unsubscribe by clicking here.
I also mail them every 2-4 days to make sure they remember who I am.

So far, it's been working fairly well but I still get complaints. Doh!

First question: where did most of your subs come from? Solo ads?

Second: Where does your "unsubscribe by clicking here" link go to? Are you able to make that link go DIRECTLY to the unsub confirmation page? ie. the page they would normally get AFTER they submit a reason for unsubbing.

So far, yes. I want to get this technique down before moving to other traffic generation methods.

You know, I haven't tested that out yet. I'm using a self-hosted autoresponder that uses Amazon SES for mailing. I'll try it out.

    Let's start with the basics.

Is double opt in enabled? If they verify their email by clicking the confirmation link and you have an unsubscribe link on each email, then then can't do anything to you and they've got no reason to complain on the first place!

I'm using a self-hosted autoresponder and I'm the only user.

I also immediately send them a welcome email with the fact that subscribed, the IP address, and an unsubscribe link.

So if they were surprised that they subscribed, they could immediately unsubscribe.

I think that placing the unsubscribe text in the beggining of the email would be a mistake - it would surely result in much higher unsubscribe rates...
    Which autoresponder are you using?

I agree that it would probably increase unsubscribe rates. But personally, I'd rather they unsubscribe than stick around and do nothing.

I'm using Sendy + Amazon so I get charged for every email that gets sent out. (Although it's still way less expensive than Aweber/GetResponse.)

Well there's not much you can do really except for sending quality information, except for all the little things we all have to include in our boradcasts.

Can you ellaborate a little more on what you actually send them? I think that's crucial to know why you get spam complaints in the first place.

Where did you get these subscribers? If they opted in to your list to receive information, and you send them relevant information, and provide a clear unsubscribe button, I'm not sure why you are getting spam complaints. I would keep going and see if it keeps happening, maybe you just ran into some unhappy people?

    Sorry about that!

It sounds to me like you're doing the right things, so I'm slightly surprised you still get spam complaints.

Are you by any chance sending "promotional offers" only?

I try to keep it about 80% information and 20% promotion. But maybe I should re-examine what I'm sending and make sure it's valuable to them.

You don't avoid it! It's going to happen regardless.

You will get spam complaints on your very first email where you give them what they subscribe for and just introduce yourself.

That being said, I guess the most common sense "strategy" is just to give value, be human and less promotions. But then again, I don't want anyone thinking that this is the way to go about it because email marketing is obviously a lot more intense then just "building relationship"

I very rarely get spam complaints.

I think it has more to do with the way you opt them in. If they just want a freebie and have no reason to interact with your follow ups then you will get more complaints.
