Talk me off the cliff....

Considering jumping the shark and plugging affiliates into a single product site. Product is patented. We have only been involved with it since August, and feel sales could be 100 times better.

Will post the url if it is not against the rules

Not quite sure what you are referring to but I guess you mean they only market 1 product?

If it has great potential and is indeed underserved then there is no reason not to get more affiliates involved.

I don't think you know what "jumping the shark" means...

Based on your post, I'm also not sure you know what "talk me off a cliff" means.

Perhaps you could outline your problem more clearly. i.e. Why do you feel like jumping off a cliff?

Finally... did you have a question?

really just started this as a vent...

talk me off the cliff - If I jump into affiliates, we give up a percentage, but should gain more overall.

jump the shark - maybe our skill set is not going to take it further and we need help through affiliate marketing

So, why would I consider this? 10 years ago I made a great living with AM, then started a brick and mortar business (with web product backbone) and closed/sold it a few years later. Been doing web consulting ever since.

Last fall we started new product development, have a project plan for each one...none have gotten to the point of considering affiliates

So, my question is: should I look at an affiliate network or just focus on doing it in house?

"I made a bad decision that has put me in a precarious position. I am prepared to see my bad decision through to the dire end unless someone can talk some sense into me - talk me off the cliff"

Based on the "Happy Days" episode where Fonzie jumps a shark while wearing his leather jacket on water skis:

"I have completely run out of any creative ideas and am simply pushing whatever crap I can in order to complete my contractual obligations"

Often a sign of hubris from a previously successful show.

I can't answer this but I do know that there are many issues that need to be considered if you are running your own in-house affiliate program. Refunds, fraud, taxes, etc.

What % are you planning on paying your affiliates btw?

After some discussion, we are considering around 40%, but with the recent (less than 5 days) launch of our newest version of the website, we need to wait a little while to determine/discuss conversion rates.
