Has anyone received offers from a person to remove links from your blog / website ? He has already paid for the links, now he wants the links removed. Does this happen often?

If you asked this question out of curiosity, the best thing would be for you to ask him why he's doing so.
Anyways, never happened to me. Actually, I seldom sell links at my blogs! Regards. |

It's happened to me through several Paid Blogging Companies. In some cases, I comply; but sometimes I don't.
I usually feel: If I was willing to take a risk with my PR, then you should be willing to accept the risk of being penalized. Also, I leave them if I feel the post doesn't make sense with out the link. So to summarize: sometimes I remove; sometimes I don't; and sometimes I add 'nofollow'. But since it's on my blog, I always feel that it is at my discretion. The only time I will definitely remove the link is if someone pays me to remove, but that money has to be in my hands! I don't know if this is a principled stand or not. Am I right to do this way? |

For blogging companies, you know that they will pay you for posts in future. This is a direct payment from the customer. If I remove the link, he may later change his mind. I think he has been doing this with many other webmasters also.

It sounds like he's had a penalty or something.
Of course, there is a more cynical explanation which nobody has yet mentioned... he may not in fact me the link owner, but a competitor. If you're number 2 in Google, it's probably easier to remove links than build them... |

I think most people are assuming that the person is the same person who asked for the link to be placed, but that would be too evil, Sam? Wouldn't it? Hehehe.

Has your site taken a hit or penalty by any search engines or got listed as a bad neighborhood site ? It is not that hard to become a bad neighborhood site , it can happen by linking to too many bad sites , which to the naked eye look fine but say other site did something shady like bad seo and got busted ect any sites linking to it can also take a hit albeit not as great as the bad neighborhood site but still a hit. Not saying you have a bad nieghborhood site mind you , but it can happen , hell it happened to me once I linked to a free poker site for entertainment and some software download sites ( not warez sites mind you ) that somehow pissed google right off and I started to take hits so it can happen.
Here is a tool I often use to check such things and it is a free tool. Bad Neighborhood - Link Exchange Tool |

run that tool on his site the link went to the home page and if it is a deep link the page linked to and your own homepage and the page that his link resides upon your site , maybe you might find something useful about all this via doing that.

Sounds lke this guy might be trying to "google bowl" his competition. Many people not only try to build their own baclinks but to get their competitors ones removed.

Well if it's the original person who paid for the links, AND you're getting paid again to remove the links, I guess I don't see why not?
I see a weird little potential business model here though... Get a really popular website in a niche with two or more main products competing with each other, then get one of them to pay you for NOT linking to the competition. LoL |

I am concerned that once I remove the links, he will do a charge back, and I will have wasted my time and lost money.

I have a good friend who works for a large company. The company has been experimenting with many different types of Internet related marketing.
One of the people involved in the project got a "little knowledge" from researching and discovered one way back links. If a few links were good then thousands of links should be GREAT. Well he paid for a whole bunch of links and the company dropped off of page one of Google. The owner of the company was furious. I can imagine him paying to have the links deleted. It could happen. 2. Another possibility-he got sacked from his company and wants to get back at them by removing some key links that can affect their rankings. The whole request looks shady to me. | |

This isn't that uncommon really.
If you have a site ranking number 2 and there's an old dinosour site ranking number 1 which just won't budge, then paying other sites to remove its links can be a good strategy. Similar to removing inbound wikipedia links if there's a wikipedia article outranking you, only it costs money. |
