I assume you're talking about SEO.

Optimizing an article isn't necessary but it's a great way of ensuring that you will get some additional traffic. Higher keyword density will get you ranked higher for the most part, and backlinking to articles is a great way to boost your rankings.

Article marketing is a great sales method if properly executed.

    Hope this helps!

well, it isn't necessary unless you want to see conversion and i couldn't agree anymore with Michael Franklin ... this is why a lot of people say that article marketing doesn't do anything for them. There are few thing you need to take care of to ensure better conversion through article marketing...

    -Research the keyword.
-Write an article that would really help a reader in some way, it should be something useful for the reader not something written just for the sake of it.
-Optimize your article and link it, this would help your article rank higher.
-Write an author bio compelling enough for the reader to click your link (this is not easy so you might wanna experiment with different versions of your author bio).

Yes, optimizing is necessary to get traffic to article. There are two ways to optimize it - 1st on the keyword level and the other is in terms o content. If the content is good, the article may become viral as in other people will point to the article and that will give good traffic. With 2nd approach, 1st is not necessary.

Yes, you do have to optimize even your article. Recently, when I was submitting to ezine, I was asked to fix the keyword density. AFAIR, it never happened before. Apparently, my keyword density was way off.

Point is, if you want to see your article ranked at the top, and positioned better than others, you have to optimize it as much as possible.

Well, you can don't bother optimising it: you'll get less SEO from it then.

On the other hand, if you DO optimise it: you'll get more SEO!

Similar to whether you need to optimise your website..your web pages..your blog, lens, etc etc..

I feel that an article is a waste if it just left alone.

    I will always:

Bookmark it to at least 10 sites
stick it on a free blog site
post it on twitter/facebook/myspace and squidoo

    kind regards
