This might be kind of a complex question I might need a web dev but who knows I thought I'd ask anyway...

Just wondering if there was a "simple" way to curate content from other websites... similar to the way Digg.com does it. Perhaps a Wordpress plugin? What would make it even better would be something that posts automatically... so my blog is basically curated content from whatever website I want. Is this possible??

Thanks!

    It is definitely possible.

There are free as well as paid WP plugins that will pull content for you automatically and will post it on your site.

    But........

As far as I know, this is not the right way to curate content.

First, even the smartest piece of script will post complete BS on your website. If it's value that you care, you shouldn't use automation.

Secondly, content curation is not just about posting other's people stuff on your site without your own thoughts/comments/review. You always need to ensure that you are adding your own thoughts to the post to make it valuable to the end user.

That's just my point of view though.

Do you want a plugin or script which will automatically assembles pieces of content or do you want to create a site like Digg which allows people to register and submit pieces of content which they find interesting while other members can vote it up or down?

Try paper.li it is a free content curation resource that gives you your own page. Promote it via social media. Make money by tweeting on some of your own sales/landing pages.

Possible, but really very inadvisable, these days. I'd advise you to be very, very careful over the legalities of "content curation".

Many people - including plenty of Warriors - have had both legal problems and websites removed by their hosting companies (after DMCA site take-down notices were served on them by copyright holders) because they unwisely imagined that "content curation" raised no legal problems, and made the huge mistake of effectively taking "legal advice" from curation enthusiasts without legal qualifications, thereby forming some rather distorted perceptions of what "fair use" means, if/when your site has any commercial intentions.

As so many have found out to their cost (often having made the mistake of believing what "curation enthusiasts" and sellers of "curation software" or "curation services" wrongly told them a few years ago, when the "curation craze" was at its height), the reality isn't nearly so simple.

Don't imagine, if taking content without express permission, that including a link back to the original will somehow exonerate or legitimize a breach of copyright - it won't.

I promise I don't mean it rudely, but my own guess is that this is probably the worst of the 12 different ideas you've had in the last 6 months: you're asking here about something that's well past its day (and for really good and valid reasons!).

This is NOT content curation. You're simply ripping off other people's hard work and sooner or later it will get you in trouble.

Content creation requires that you read, analyze, and provide thoughtful human comment on other people's posts. There is no software or plugin that will take your place in curating content.

It requires that you actually do some work!

Let me ask you . . . who among the visitors to your web site wants to see and read content that is simply cut from other people's work? No one. And if you're planning to impress the search engines or fill up your web site with rehashed articles . . . that strategy has never worked well.

Ok, TWO things... (and Alexa I would LOVE your input on this... btw how are things love <3)

Well first let me say this is JUST a half ass idea... I'm not actively trying to go and implement this so don't worry I'm not going to rip anyone off anytime soon.

Next thing, what I REALLY wanted to do wasn't exactly a plugin that copied and pasted word for word an article from somewhere else onto my blog, no... what I wanted was for it to copy maybe the first few lines, just a quick "snip bit" and then a "read more" button and when the user clicks on the "read more" button it takes them OFF my site... to the original site where the article was posted. IS THIS ALLOWED?? I don't see a problem with this method because really all I'm doing is giving them free advertising! But then the only problem with this is that they aren't staying on my site... and that's kind of the whole point right, you want them to stay on YOUR site so they hopefully click your ads. But anyway I was hoping this "method" of content curation made it legal, a small quote, with the a "read more" linking to the full article OFF your site.

And then this is something I'd REALLY like an answer from you guys... (active Warriors) and especially Alexa because I know you're pretty well educated in the copyright "arena" and adamantly tell people to avoid copyright issues.

(I wrote this in a private FB group I belong to so I'm just going to copy & paste)

Something came to my attention while surfing Buzzfeed I never realized before that I wanted to ask you guys about... It's pretty obvious that in the internet marketing community copyright photos (and basically anything taken from Google) is a HUGE no-no and is always strongly talked against... and there's constantly new threads popping up on where's the best place to get royalty free and stock images for your blog and stuff... rehashed content AND photos are NOT to be used EVEN IF you attribute the original place of origin with a "citation" of where it was from, either a link back or an author name, etc. It's still "supposedly" a super big no-no. Correct?? BUT... If that's true... then how come copyright images are used ALL OVER Buzzfeed articles?? This is just an example... #26 is a gif from modern family AND WITH the ABC logo still in the corner of the image! http://www.buzzfeed.com/…/horrific-t...n-every… And it just says "ABC" really small under the image, that's it. Plus there were other shows and celebrities used. Is it fine then to use their images?? Surely they got them from Google and/or Tumblr...

So why is it okay for Buzzfeed to use copyright photos all over their articles but I can't use an image I found on Google for my blog? And what about making a "content curation" site as long as you're not literally copying and pasting the entire article from another site onto yours... but instead only using a small quote with a link to "read more" and sending the user to where they can find the full article elsewhere... (isn't this EXACTLY what digg.com does?) thoughts??

    Thanks!

Here is some information about Buzzfeed which talks a bit about their copyright infringement issues. Their last round of funding was 50 million dollars and they still get sued for using other people's stuff. Maybe not in exactly the way you are describing but they have an army of lawyers.

BuzzFeed - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Or try this search in Google: law firm for image copyright infringement

Content curation is pretty much a dead horse for new players and I suspect that some of the people you want to take snippets from are not going to think of this as free advertising. I could be wrong, they all might like it, but they might like it if you wrote about their article and linked to it.
