How to pick a sub-niche (do I need a mentor?)

Hi, everybody.

I'm looking for help getting started in IM. I'm pretty new to it (I've tried blogging before but abandoned my two blogs in a month). So, this time before I start, I need to be sure I have a profitable, long-term niche idea.

And that's where I fall. I have a few general ideas, but nothing too exact. This is due to the fact that I'm not really an expert in any niche. So, I have a few ideas in niches I'm interested in, but I can't narrow them down to a sub-niche nor do I know how to test my ideas.

So, one way is to to find a mentor, right? Someone to talk to one on one, that could advise you, give you steps on how to move when you're stuck. I did stumble upon a coaching application but the funny thing was, they told me the price at the last minute after an hour long conversation. It was way too expensive for me.

My main idea is to build a blog, offer something to collect emails and create my own product to promote. My first goal is to make $500/month through adsense, ebooks. etc. (best, in 4 months).

Does that sound achievable?
Maybe I'm thinking about this in a wrong way?
And finally, how can I get unstuck and start moving with making money online?

Thanks so much for any help.

You don't need a mentor to find a profitable niche. And no one is going to be able to know what business topic is right for you better than you do.

Start by focusing on demand. Look at the broader areas that interest you and see if you can identify some common problems, needs, wants, or desires. The idea is to create or affiliate around a product or service that meets some expressed demand (or desire).

Go online into niche forums and see what people are talking about. Go to shopping sites and see what people are buying. Go to magazine sites and see what the hot topics of the day might be. Go to "groups" and social media sites and observe what people are looking for.

If you can find something that people are asking about (maybe a common problem) you have the making of a profitable niche.

    Good luck to you,

This is a huge area, and you're right to seek help.

    You have a few options:

    - Free research
    - Products
    - Coaching

Having been an affiliate marketer for nearing on 20 years, and without ever having to resort to coaching, I can tell you that enough answers are available for free without reaching for your credit card.

Question is: are you on the right track. Yes. But yes with a caveat: you're missing out several important steps.

My firm recommendation (and I know you see the same advice a lot on WF, but it appears for good reason): learn how to build a list. Blogs created by beginners rarely do well, do anything but dry up. Your best bet is to stick with a basic (relatively) but known-to-be-working method. Once you have that setup, and you're working towards the future, then I would say explore better ways (than blogs) to derive affiliate income.

I wish you all the best,

    Tom

  • You don't need a mentor. You may end up finding somebody who can maybe give you some tips, but you don't need to pay somebody a huge amount of money in order to see success.

When trying to find a niche, or any sub-niche, your goal is to find something that HAS A PROBLEM.

There are tons of niches, but not every single one has a problem that can be solved. By simply going into a niche that has no problems, you cannot create a problem and pretend to fix it. Find a problem, find the NEED, and discover the solution that they need in that niche.

Getting a coach or mentor to answer your questions isn't a bad idea when you're just starting out. In my own experience, it took a lot of trial and error to find my "right place." But here's the thing... even though I had some great mentors when I got started back in 1998, none of them could tell me what the right niche for me would ultimately be. What they could do was teach me how to market, write sales copy, build websites and so forth.

Although they made suggestions... nothing "felt right" when I actually got involved in that particular niche.

So, I wrote and published a lot of information products in different niches and made money. In the meantime, I started attracting the attention of offline business owners in a variety of niches. These individuals had the money to pay for a variety of services and began paying me to consult with them, even though I was in a different "online market" that had nothing to do with their offline business. What they were after was the marketing advice about how to bring their offline business into the online world.

So at the end of the day, the niche found me.

For you, and many others in the same position, the answers won't come through the questions or the asking... they'll come in the doing. Pick something and get started with your eBook or Kindle book. Learn how to set up a clean, simple Wordpress site and get an easy to use landing page plugin and start building your list.

If what you're doing doesn't work out, take the skills you acquire in that niche and apply them to the next idea. Just make sure you give something a good 6 months of honest focus and effort before you move on.

Some people build businesses around their passions and interests while others focus strictly selling products that are in high demand. Just remember, it's a business. And like any business, it requires time, energy, focus and money. Even when you find your place, there are days that will leave you questioning your decision! That's fine, too. It's just how life is sometimes. You take a break and then come back refreshed.

This is a great time of year to prepare for a new chapter in life. Good luck to you

Talking with someone who has some experience can be very useful, especially after you have picked up some basic knowledge yourself first. Its hard to decide if someone is the right fit for you based on their marketing. Lots of people have great marketing, but don't mentor or coach well.

Those two things are not mutually exclusive, all I am saying is don't make a decision on who you want to learn from based solely on their marketing, especially if what they say they are teaching is not the same as what they really do to promote themselves.

Yes, it's achievable. You can also do better than that. I would concentrate on product creation and list building...not so much adsense.

You're thinking about it the right way. You don't need to pay a mentor just to find a sub-niche. Search the war room (or the special offers section) for "finding niches"

In order to get unstuck, you've got to move...Do Something...Remove distractions. Don't think too much. Take action, even if it's small.

I tend to use keyword tools and find the highest number of searches with the least amount of competition for whatever niche I'm researching.
