I Need A Quick Crash Course

Hi guys,

I just found Warrior Forum today and need a crash course on online marketing. I'm not sure how many times people have asked for this in the past but I wasn't able to find anything in the archives via search.

I started a blog several months ago after I unwittingly subscribed to what was advertised as a get rich quick scheme on one of the hundreds of websites promising a million dollars in the first three days, lol, but I quickly lost interest when a week later I was sitting on 34 cents.

I have a few questions I wanted to have addressed:

1. Do I need my own site / blog to get into CPA? Or to make use of Adwords/Adsense?

2. If I don't need my own site, how do I make money and how do I advertise on other people's sites?

3. Explain Adwords? How is it different to Adsense and what does it mean to start a "campaign"?

4. What is Black hat? Arguments for and against? Why does it carry such a "dirty business" stigma?

5. How do I get my site or blog noticed and how do I generate traffic without roughing it out for 6 months?

6. Am I missing something?

I am trying to accumulate as much knowledge as I can before continuing any further, and this forum and its members are great!! But I feel I am missing a fundamental understanding of online marketing, which is preventing me from "getting" all the tips and tricks which are on offer.

If anyone can offer me a quick overview of the very basics, I would be forever grateful. I am really serious about making this work for me, but I need some help.

Thank-you in advance.

    AdSense - Google pays you.

    AdWords - You pay Google.

AdSense - Your site displays other people's ads.

AdWords - Your ad shows up in search results & other websites.

So, a campaign is your own ad campaign for your ad or series of ads.

      Welcome to the forum Empiia,

If you visit the Warriors forum as often as you can with a notebook to take notes,
you will get a lot of answers to your questions... you'll even learn things you didn't
      have questions for...

After years of marketing, I still find that that there is a lot involved in Internet Marketing, whatever Niches you choose, so that I often learn something when I visit this forum.

You can also go to Google Search and enter your question such as: 'what is a niche'
or 'how do I install a blog' and you will get answers.

      Good luck,

      Fran

        1. Do I need my own site / blog to get into CPA? Or to make use of Adwords/Adsense?

Technically no. You can earn money with Adsense through sharing revenues with sites such as squidoo and other social profiling sites However the sooner you get your own piece of Internet Real Estate you control the better.

It's doubtful a CPA network will accept you without a website or blog.

        2. If I don't need my own site, how do I make money and how do I advertise on other people's sites?

Use a blogger blog, it's free. Pick a niche and then an affiliate product. Review the affiliate product on your blog and using your affiliate link back to the product.

        3. Explain Adwords? How is it different to Adsense and what does it mean to start a "campaign"?

AdWords is when you pay Google to advertise your site on other's blogs and sites. When a visitor on that site clicks your ad you have to pay Google. AdSense is the opposite. Google pays you to accept ads from others. When a visitor to your site clicks through on an ad on your site you get paid.

        4. What is Black hat? Arguments for and against? Why does it carry such a "dirty business" stigma?

Black hat are ways to trick the search engines into ranking you higher. It is also used to trick visitors to your site. Such as posting an ad on Craigslist saying you have a job opportunity. Someone replies and you email that they have to have a copy of their credit report before applying and giving them a link to one of your CPA offers for a free credit report.

        5. How do I get my site or blog noticed and how do I generate traffic without roughing it out for 6 months?

The long answer to this would take an entire ebook (see my sig line). The short answer is work. Distribute articles using your keywords that link back to your site. Use social bookmarking for your site. Set up a network of free sites (squidoo, blogger blogs, hubpages, xanga) to link back to your site using your keywords. Join forums and discussion boards and well I think you get the idea. Work.

        6. Am I missing something?
        Yes.

These are difficult questions to answer in a single email because most of your answers can be found in these forums or some online guides. But, in the long run it comes down to your own effort.

The answers for AdSense and Adwords can be found here - but the basics are that you pay Google to place ads on other sites (AdWords) and Google pays you for showing others ads on your site (AdSense). Campaigns are just runs of your ads (AdWords) over time with targeted keywords.

As for Black hat techniques - just don't do it. I'll let someone else talk to that.

I've answered questions like this before - but will repeat the general concepts you should always keep in mind (this is really the answer to your #6 - am I missing something?). Even though I have made some good money online most of the money making systems are really a bad mix of techniques and promises that typically burn people out right away because of one of the following:

    1. You have to pay too much money to learn or get into this business

    2. You don't have the computer skills to work online

    3. You are trying to make money on something you know nothing about or care about (this is my pet peave!)

    4. You don't have the diligence to do the day to day work

    5. You are not thinking like a small business

    6. You are desperate for money and will do anything

These statements are what typically splits those who make little or nothing to those who make millions online.

I started out like you wondering what to do and how to do it and was left with a lot of frustrated mistakes. But, if there is anything I've learned online in the last 5 years is that if you don't pursue something you love (your interest, hobbies, life dreams, etc) you probably won't make much.

I know this isn't the specific answers you want, but, my advice to you is to:

    1. Start with a business mindset first - what is your plan? what will you sell? do you have knowledge that is marketable? (Don't worry - many things are marketable - I've seen successful online businesses just on simple home ice dam removal because the person doing it loved construction - and saw another make a mint on care of pet fish - yes, pet fish!!!).

    2. Be sure to really start your business - as a sole propietor or LLC. You get huge tax breaks for anything you buy for your business - books, computers, software, desks, phones, etc. Don't buy anything until you do this!!!! It will save you a ton of money.

    3. List every thing that you love to do or know about and write them down. Then, pick what you think you could market online as a product, service or knowledge (such as a blog)- stick to it!! Don't go online trying to sell diet plans if you know nothing about nutrition or dieting. If you know something about specific pets, legal forms, cameras, - the sky is the limit! Use that knowledge to your advantage and build on it.

    4. Not give into desperation - let things work out over time. You can't build a business in a day. Making big money online takes time - you have to prove yourself and have the motivation to work on it every day. Keep at it and don't quit.

    5. Invest in your education. Learn as much as you can on how to do this - buy a few online business guides. I'm constantly amazed that people are not willing to spend a couple hundred dollars to learn how to make money online when they are willing to pay thousands for a MBA or even an online college degree.

    6. Don't get distracted - probably the #1 killer of online hopes and dreams. Once you start learning this business you will definitely see more opportunities - hold off!! You will spread yourself too thin. Be focused.

I hope this helps you - it wan't specific - but I wanted you to understand that you must invest in yourself. I've lived it and think that anyone can do this.

I'm trying to do the same thing now....but something I've discovered is all this new info is overwhelming, and I'm spending all my energy on research and still have yet to take any ACTION. A lot of people here say to just pick one method and go with it, just focus on that one thing and do the best to make it work. Don't worry about mistakes (because they will be made), but the important thing is to get started and begin the process of learning by doing.

Maybe I should follow my own advice lol.
