Social Bookmarking, how much how often?

I'm trying to figure out what is exceptable as far as social bookmarking goes.

A few months ago I was using social bookmarking quite heavily, and was getting a TON of traffic. I was doing nothing else, and was doing quite well with Google ads on a number of the sites I was doing this with. And then . . . nothing, dropped from the Google index entirely . . . all of my websites.

Now (it was really my first jump into this world) I realize what I was doing was link spamming, a definite no, no, I get it, not a good thing. So I don't want to be doing that again.

On the other hand, while I am generally opposed to blkhat methods, I don't really have issues with grey hat.

So the question is, how much is too much? When and where does it cross that line? And the primary measurement of that line being Google.

Thanks
Garret

You should bookmark all content pages, but not to every site every time.

    JasonParker,

Thanks . . . I sure do get a lot of emails from you btw. :-)
The issue is this: 500 websites x 500 pages = 250,000 pages, just as an example. I was actually dealing with more pages than that. So while your statement is certainly correct, it really does not help give me an idea of where the "line in the sand" is, or even it's neighborhood.

I have a number of SB accounts, I can literally bookmark as many pages as fast as I want, through proxy alternating accounts. So the question really is, how hard and how fast can I get away with?

CaribbeanDream, Yeah, I hear you about Twitter, the social bookmarking is a bit different though . . . seems like it's tipping point is much less sensitive.

Well, you want to bookmark everything for deeplinking. But you don't want to bookmark every page of your site to the same group of social sites. That wouldn't look very natural to Google. Instead, for example, bookmark half of the sites on your list... but not the same half of sites each time. Use new combinations every time.

Social bookmarking provide great traffics but as you have said there are limitations.Spamming is a big no no especially to google and i suggest start with the white hat way for much better assurance.

Several thousand bookmarks a week is not going to hurt you.. Ofcourse there is a proper way to do social bookmarking. Huge difference between proper social bookmarking and link spam.

Normally I would post a detailed post explaining everything, I have done this many times over on this forum. The problem is when I post these long detailed responses I always have someone that comes in and bashes me and claims I do self promotion when infact I do NOT.

I have created many many very informative post and none of them had anything to do with self promotion at all. I have since decided to stop posting these informative threads because it gets old after awhile of being bashed by certain people.

With that said though you are free to search my post because the answer to your question is in several of my post.

There are several schools of thought on this and it varies a little based on the bookmarking site. Below are what I've seen of the styles and their effectiveness.

    1. Black hat / Howie Schwartz style or as you say linkspam -- bunch of accounts autobookmark everything -- when account gets banned who cares start a new account.... It works in the short-term, but generally not long-term.

    2. White hat -- become an authority in your niche by submitting tons of quality content and occasionally include your best linkbait content. Not a short term game -- can work very well long term though

    3. Grey hat -- Multiple accounts submitting a blend of your pages and others pages. I tend to submit material from authority sites like Wikipedia etc so I'm not submitting my competition. You should still try to keep your own sites submissions to around 10-20% of your total submissions. I've had good success with this. This is a good strategy short and long-term especially since you are using a proxy.

Doug, I can't believe I have missed that. Shows what happens when focus becomes tunnel vision. I think #3 is a great and simple to implement solution.

      Thanks

Could you please elaborate on this linkspam social bookmarking.
      A. how many social bookmarking accounts is a bunch? dozens? hundreds?
      B. So you would create dozens or hundreds of social bookmarking accounts at each site, and then bookmark your site to all of them on each account is that correct?
      C. What exactly happens to your site when you do this in the short term?
      D. How long is the short term?
      E. How long does it take for an account to get banned on average?

      Please elaborate alot more.
      Thanks

Mostly whenever I post a new article on my blog, I wait for 24 hours and then start bookmarking it. I do bookmarking in more than 100 sites. This is why, after I post a new article, it shows up in google's second page within 15 mins. And after completing the bookmarkings it slowly comes on the first page and remains there for that particular keyword. Currently I do get 40-50% of unique visitors from google search, which I think is only because of social bookmarking.

So I do bookmarking for all the pages on the net which are related/created by me, for example, my youtube channel, my ezine articles, my squidoo lens, my press releases even my articles which are been posted on some highly ranked blogs
