I'm writing this hoping to save you some time.

Despite reading(here on this forum) over and over to focus on just one thing, after a month of being a member here I realise I have made a gross mistake in my whole approach to IM.

Two mistakes really (that i hope you will avoid):

Mistake 1:

This was my PRIMARY mistake:
PROBLEM:
I came here and immediatley saw $$$ signs....
My eyes glazed over as I saw the incredible potential of Internet Marketing and I started my efforts expecting to make money immediatley.

SOLUTION:
By all means, come here and get excited, but instead of seeing $$$ signs, see ways to build a valuable website or product or skill-set.
Build these so you can build traffic and lists. (Money will be a by-product AFTER you've supplied people with valuable, quality content!)

I have seen it written here - 'value first, money later' or similar concepts, but I just thought I'd run before I could walk.

Mistake 2:
PROBLEM:
Despite reading that one of newbies most common mistakes is to try too many things at once, I thought I'd start with a 3-pronged attack.
(I literally planned to build and promote 3 seperate websites while also promoting another warrior's site/product as well).

SOLUTION:
Work on one thing at a time.
It sounds simple and I knew I should have done this but I ended up getting over excited and now, a month after joining the warrior forum I have 3 websites which are all under construction, no subscribers and nothing sold.
If I'd worked on one site only, at the very least, it would be finished by now. At the very best, that site would be gathering subscribers and making a few sales.
---------=============--------------

SUMMARY: Really do focus on just one thing.
Instead of expecting $$$, expect visitors and subscribers.

From now on I will forget about trying to make money, I will simply try to make the best damn site in my niche! I will even offer things for free. My new goal will be to build a big list, not to make money.

If you provide quality content and promote your site, as people here will freely advise you to, the money will follow later.

I know this is nothing new, but I'm posting it anyway as a case study example of someone who didn't follow the warrior's advice and sure enough, now has nothing to show for it.
SEE THEY TOLD YOU SO!

Hey! You're absolutely right. There's no shortcut to establishing yourself in IM! Must learn to walk before you can run like you said. Thanks for the tips.

Yup - Now that it's happened, I can't believe how silly i was. I think it might be, in part, due to the kind of ads IM'ers put out there to sell their products: Headlines like "I made $10,000 this month - Learn How!"...

Thing we newbs have to remember is that it's easy to make $10,000 in 30 days if you have a list(subscriber's e-mail address') of 10,000 people!

BUT FIRST YOU NEED THE LIST!!!
As a newb you get overwhelmed with information and products for sale but you have to keep remembering, your LIST is KING! To get that as fast as possible you need to provide quality content as fast as possible. Giving things away for free in exchange for an opt-in is the best way to do it fast.

Thanks, Marc... that's great advice! I've made those sames mistakes since I started 4 months ago and realize it's time to buckle down and focus on one thing at a time.

Yes, before they made thousands in 30 days, they had about 180 days building a list, and communicating with those on the list, and building a relationship (read: TRUST) with those on the list. (includes not spamming them with an email a day, etc)

180 days to get 10,000 subscribers?! Wow, now THAT is a trick I'd like to know how to do!!!

What I plan to do with my newly earth-planted feet is provide QUALITY content to my niche site, offer my newsletter for FREE and visit forums in my niche (posting with my site in my signature link), subscribing to twitters of my niche and doing the same, submitting articles about my niche to EZA and alike... and eventually when I have enough subscribers, I will begin to sell them things.

I don't know how fast I will be able to build my 'list' but if anyone knows how to build a list of 10,000 in 180 days, please explain it here on this thread!

    Here's another advice for newbies:

Get organized. Take a notebook and a pen. Start jotting down every little actionable task that comes to your mind (not goals) ... See how much of it can you achieve it that day itself before you hit the bed. And make sure you do it. Shift your focus from the BIG goal to the SMALL tasks that will help you reach that big goal. This way, you'll wake up every day with a new excitement to reach the goal for the day, that is: KICK OFF EVERY TASK OFF YOUR TODO LIST.

I do this more or less, but tend to list weekly tasks and break them down into daily ones. It is really satisfying when you are able to cross items off your list!

I don't always manage to complete every task I list... but I'm getting there and am an awful lot more productive than I was before I started listing tasks.

Hey thanks for the post Marc, I have to say that I was EXACTLY like that. I didn't realize that there was something wrong with what I was doing until I read newbie nightmares. I guess you could say it was a HUGE eye opener for me lol. But your absolutely right, information overload gets you no where. You have to pick one thing that you can really pursue, find all the information about that, and just do it. You would be amazed to see what the human mind is capable of when all of its attention is on one thing. And in anything you do in life, value should always be your first choice. If you provide value to a customer in need you will gain a customer for life, if you provide crap to a customer in need you will lose all their friends possible purchases.

Thanks for that insight. I'm a newbie too and this is an eye opener. I actually have a great product to promote and got sidetracked by getting involved with all kinds of other offers. Time to refocus...

    Thanks for sharing the info.

You have given out the secret of success in making money online within 500+ words which most of the books tell in 300+ pages worth of gibberish.

    Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for the advice. I haven't come here seeing $$$, but I definitely learned that building a list of subscribers is the key to success and valuable content is what motivates people to sign up.

Yeah, I got involved with way too many IM opportunities. I spent thousands of dollars and was just "spinning my wheels" and getting nowhere. I have now decided to concentrate on just two as the approaches are quite different.

My suggestions is also... concentrate on one opportunity at a time.
