Default Article Ranking - who cares?

hah! made you click on this one. But I do have a serious question...

I hate to ask a dumb question, but why would one want an article to be ranked high in SERPs? I want people to visit my page/site, so it seems that I want that to get the ranking. Seems like an indirect way to get traffic.

Hmmm...looks like I'm the first your trick worked on here hehe

Anyway, in a way, when u write articles, you're not doing so simply for the sake of getting ranked high on SEs but also in a hope that many others will republish your articles on their websites and blogs which means more chances of getting more traffic to see your site. Also, I doubt there's such thing as 'indirect way of getting traffic' cos to me, traffic is traffic and the only difference between any sort of traffic is if it is highly targeted or not.

We all want targeted traffic cos that's what works. And if anyone is patient enough to read your article no matter where it's come from, be it SE or publisher sites, it is usually targetted.

...Make any sense?

It is preferable to use content articles that have minimum 3% keywords. Expect and select the key word such that when a person is searching for your site he should use that key word to reach directly you.

I want people to visit my pages/sites too and that's why I want my articles to rank. If you write a good article with a resource box that makes people want to see more, your articles will bring people to your site.

The reason people advocate getting an article ranking vs. just trying to get your site ranked directly is because it's a hell of a lot easier (and faster) to get an article at one of the high PR directories ranked than it is to get a newer or lower PR website ranked.

Article directories like EZA and Goarticles have been around for a long time, have a good PR with google, and have a really good internal linking structure. These and other factors make it easier to get an article ranked than it is to get most other pages and sites ranked unless your site has some age, a ton of content, a great internal linking structure and high PR, etc. it's definitely easier to get an article high in the SERPs.

Sure, it's great to have your site get ranked as number 1 in the SERPS, but don't you want the #2 position as well.

That's why you want your article ranked - get all the positions on page 1 for your keyword with your various "web properties". And also what Adamv said too!

Take a look at this article on contextual links. This is the main SEO benefit article marketing offers (in my opinion).

It's also a fair assumption that Google, Bing and Yahoo Search index article repositories more frequently than your site. Assuming that's correct, it's likely the article will appear in Google's SERPs far more quickly. If time is of the essence, this can be very useful.

In some cases, an article is more likely to get highly ranked if it's totally unique and published on an article site with very high PageRank (e.g. if it's featured by the site).

It's also more likely that future implementations of real time search will index article directories in real time long before they get to your site. The above link (click 'real time search') is to my latest Blog entry, which looks at a few of the potential benefits of real time search.

66 ways to get links (and traffic) to your site.
