I have question and maybe some of you can answer it. I earn a bit of money on Elance writing articles. I have done quite a few jobs and my ratings are pretty good. In the last month or so I have made lots of proposals. I understand if I am not accepted. But what I don't understand is why the individuals who create the jobs and have 20-40 proposals or more don't select anyone? I have more than a month old proposals that I made and the hiring is still open.
Surely if there is 30-40 proposals then you can pick the right candidate for yourself. What are they waiting for? Why would anyone create a job when they are not even interested in actually getting started?

Sadly, this seems to happen quite a lot - and not just on elance. I used to tender for jobs on guru.com, but stopped doing it for the reasons you state. It became largely a waste of time.

    Because they suck!

Honestly I don't know why. My experience as a writer on ELance was so bad, I long ago stopped using it to prospect. Your experience may be different, but there are plenty of writers who feel like Elance is the best place to find the worst clients in the world.

All the bidding sites are like that. I have bid on jobs now and then. I get invited to bid on lots of jobs but when I look at them, the budget is ridiculously low or there are other factors that make me gag. I was once invited to interview THREE TIMES to be a VA to translate Italian into English and vice versa. I declined but kept being invited. I ended up complaining to Elance about that one.

I prefer getting clients through this forum, my sites, Gumtree or from referrals.

  • Because most of these people probably don't do this full time. They plan to do something but never get round to doing it or find another service somewhere like fiverr.

If you want to be a freelancer in any field be prepared to spend a lot of your time looking for work. it's just the way it goes....

First. I'm surprised you even landed jobs on Elance. Awhile ago I was getting into some Freelance web development work and couldn't land a job on Elance or another provider (not saying who). Even trying to give people amazing deals just to try and get some reviews. Soooo I basically gave up and started doing PPC for my services.
