Hey. I was just wondering how long it took all of you to start making money online? I've only been at this for a couple months now but truly believe that with a 1 year plan & dedication that anything is possible. Did you all start making money slowly over time or did it happen all at once around 6 months into having your site? Thanks

    I got lucky.

Without boring you with the full story: I was at university and working at a hotel in my spare time and my employer paid me to design their website; not long after which I had other hotels contacting me (through word of mouth), and not long after that I found affiliate marketing. This was a shade over 20 years ago. I no longer web design, and I'm now into many different models, but it was a fun time, and like I say a lucky one. Speaking about your own situation: You have a great mindset, great work ethic, and a great upbeat nature. (I see you around WF and notice all that.) Those go a long way in this business. What model are you running at the moment, if you don't mind me asking?

Yeah. I really like your website & think I got my inspiration from you when I 1st started, so I appreciate you saying all that. I'm only working on my 2 sites right now, but finally got my autoresponder set up today & have been trying to get some clicks from bing ads. I was also lucky and got a $160 free credit towards ppc so I'm going to see if I can start make some sales & building my list that way. I've learned alot since I joined the forum & is nice to see that you can make money online with the right methods. Now I just need to get them indexed & start getting more traffic to them

        Thanks very much for that.

I checked out your sites earlier and I like them a lot. When you've been around the block more than once, you tend to get an instinct for who has it, who's going to make it; with no false encouragement whatsoever, I get that feeling about you. So keep at it; not that you need me saying that.

If you don't mind me saying, right now I wouldn't worry so much about ranking websites or pages. You'll be at it for ages before you see a return. What I'd do is boil down your list model to the bare essentials:

        - Squeeze page design
        - Freebie
        - Sales funnel
        - Traffic

It's great that you got the $160 free credit. And nothing to add here; other than aim for a lot of low-competition actionable terms.

As far as traffic building goes, what I'd do is aim for your freebie to cover some distinct MMO niches. Mention them - distinctly on your main page - then make a different squeeze page for each niche.

        What I'd then do:

        - Target easy to rank terms in YT for each of the niches (give Daily Motion a bash too; okay traffic and has some okay Google juice)

        - Setup some Google Alerts for those terms and sprinkle your page links in all the right places

        - Overall - hammer those niches on every free platform.

        - I'd also go for a quick return if I was monetizing at this stage: think about email / zip submits that pay for a free action; those suckers mount up when you're piling on the traffic.

You've probably got it covered, but I figure it won't hurt to mention some of the above, just in case.

        Take no prisoners!!

        Tom

With my latest venture, it took about two months to launch, but we made money with it immediately once we did -- albeit not very much at the beginning! Our income grew, slowly at first and then faster and faster -- pretty much what you'd expect given the standard model of business growth, the S-curve.

As for you, personally, I think a one-year plan is way too long. My first two ventures suffered from overplanning and under-implementation and consequently both failed. Planning is important, but so is implementation. But equally important -- and often ignored -- is evaluation: it's imperative that you understand what you're doing right and what you're doing wrong.

The money is important -- but especially in the beginning, it's a really bad indicator of how well you're doing. Making money takes sustained success over a long period of time. Important actions you take today might not pay off financially for months. Moreover, making money is dependent on doing the complete package correctly: product, traffic, sales, branding, etc. Even if you do everything else perfectly, if you do any one of these things wrong -- if, for instance, you have beautiful sales copy, and a fantastic product, but no traffic -- you won't see any money. But in the previous example, you don't want to give up or throw out your beautiful sales copy just because you aren't making money. You want to get more traffic!

So at least in the beginning, don't focus so much on the money -- it's just not a reliable indicator of early progress. Think of the money more as a side effect of achieving all your other business goals. Then focus on each of those goals individually until your business is a smoothly running machine. At that point, the money will roll in by iteself.

When I first got online, it took me about 3 full months of plugging away (doing a lot of stuff that wasted my time) and I made my first $250.

Having a one year plan will work just as long as you work every day. You don't need to put in 8 hours per day but 1-2 hours per day will do you wonders in One year.

That moment that you get your first sale or commission.. Amazing feeling, saying "IT ACTUALLY WORKS!"

The sooner that happens the better IMO. If it doesn't happen within a year, there is something definitely wrong.

Thanks. That is about all the time I have whenever I have to work. I'm putting in 12 hour days at work right now but would love to be able to eventually work from home

I started a long time ago, some time in the 90s and made my first commission off of a web/graphic design site. If I would have made a year plan, I would have had much greater success. The key is to do something every day. Like the user above stated, you don't need to put in 8 hour days if this is just a new venture and you work a 9 to 5 already.

Treat it like a business and you'll find success.

It also depends on the site and niche. I have had some sites bring in $50 or more a day in just a few months, but others never really pick up traction.

A one year plan is great but make sure you are breaking that down to daily tasks, steady consistent daily action will always work no matter what the goal.

Thanks everybody for letting me know. Hopefully it won't take that long to see some progress but I'm willing to give it a year if that is what it takes to succeed

Yes, a one year plan is great, but, what helps is to get fast, albeit small, RESULTS.

You will not find a shortage here at WF of people who have struggled for months, some for years. My opinion as to the reason for this is:

NO clearly identified goals with realistic and doable action steps coupled with NO results after a lot of effort.

Again, my opinion, but when I do take on a student (rare), they must show RESULTS in the first 30 days. I like to see them reach $1,000.00 in profit in 30 days, which will inspire them, motivate them and keep them climbing the ladder.

When a person puts in 100 hours (by my research) and doesn't have any tangible results, the Shiny Object Syndrome kicks in and off they go chasing rainbows and unicorns.

Dollars tend to be exponential, they grow more rapid with time and adjusted behavior, focusing on what works and losing what doesn't.

Have dollar amounts on your one year plan along with time increments, so you create a sort of scorecard (like in golf) so you can see if you are on PAR or getting into double bogey territory.

ONE year, with only 10-12 hours per week is plenty of time to achieve realistic goals you can build on.

Yeah. I've had the "Shiny Object Syndrome" before & never had any luck with it. Going to stick with what I have as they are some of the best ways I have found. It is a good idea to make a money plan as well but I figure it's all a numbers game & would be happy with an extra $1000 a month right now
