Need help: choosing a niche / keyword search

I am currently working on a simple spreadsheet document that will help me (and others - hopefully) choose potentially profitable niches.

May I ask those of you with experience to help me decide what criteria I should go by as I decide if a keyword/niche looks promising or not? Here are some things that have been recommended on the Forum (what do you think? do these work for you? is there anything else that works for you?):

(1) KEI

As you put your potential keywords to the KEI test: do you use Wordtracker as you try to determine how many searches are made for the particular keyword (and obviously measure it against in brackets Google results)? Do you ever use Google Keyword Tool (The differences in results between WT and GKT are often huge)?

I have seen a recommendation that only 100+ KEI keywords should be considered. What do you think?

(2) >... daily results, <... google competition

I really like this idea because it's simple. What do you think? Where would you set your benchmark? I've seen people here on the Forum recommending niches with more than 10 daily results and less than 10,000 in brackets Google results. Others go for <300,000 Google competition. I guess it depends on what you intend to do afterwards (marketing strategy, etc.).

(3) Strength of competition

Daniel Molano in his awesome Keyword Research & Implementation 101 thread from 5 months ago points out that "strength of competition"... is actually MUCH more important than the number of competition. He then recommends that the competitors from the 1st page of Google search result should be checked for incoming links (unless I've got it wrong). His criterion is less than 30 incoming links for all websites listed on the 1st page of Google results.

What do you think about this idea?

Is there any other template you use as you choose your niche or keywords?

Please - respond only if you are experienced and know what you are talking about (don't guess).

Also - any help will be appreciated, even the shortest comment about the smallest detail of this post.

Thanks!
