Default Payment Processor Question - Upgrading members

I have a membership site with multiple levels, each one an add-on to the one before.

Is there a PayPal or Authorize.net function, or a PHP type script somewhere, that will allow a user to change membership levels and thus raise monthly subscription rate without having to physically cancel the previous level and rejoin at the new level?

Since the upgrade level will include all of the content from the lower level, I would like the user to be able to click on an "Upgrade Now" type of button to add the new membership level without the distraction of canceling the lower level.

Any help, hints, ideas or suggestions (other than telling me to go jump in a lake) would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Kirk
