New to all this and want to expand on my youtube channel.

Hello Everyone!

Been reading through this forum for a few days after i came across it looking for SEO tips.

Im from the UK and currently run a youtube channel which gets about 1000 views a day. I make about 2 new videos a month. They are all about technology. Reviews, Unboxings, Tutorials etc. I make a little cash off it from adsense, about £2 a day, and then very occasionally (2% of the clicks maybe) i get a click through on an amazon link in the description that gets a purchase.

I also have a twitter with about 500 followers and a facebook page with about 30 (just started this).

I was wondering really if you guys think its a good idea to make a website / blog that goes along with it? Every time i post a new video i could post it on my website, and then expand upon it with a little article. I could also post smaller tutorials that are not worthy of a video themselves.

Currently I have looked into the options and seen i could get a hosted wordpress blog on go daddy for £1 a month for 24 months which includes a domain name.

I realise that those viewing figures are small, but im keen to grow them over time. I come from a software development background so im not too bad around computers.

Hope you guys can help, any advise is very gladly received!

Cheers

James

It's definitely a good idea to funnel traffic away from youtube (on which you have hardly any control) to your own site where you have all the control. It's something that most people on youtube do, but only some do right.

What lots of people do totally don't work. Spamming your website link on your videos, comments etc doesn't get you traffic, even if it did, it gets you the wrong traffic. You need to have genuinely good content to attract people to your site, stay there for a bit, and hopefully turn them into recurring visitors.

This is just my opinion . . .

Trying to make a decent amount of money from Adsense with an occasional commission from Amazon is not a good business model for the average person. You'll put in a lot of time and effort to make a very small amount of money (as you've experienced). In order for the Adsense pennies to add up to anything significant, you need to be pushing mega traffic and that's not the easiest thing to do for someone new and on a tight budget (which apparently your are since you're talking about cheap hosting and free blogs).

It would be much better to find demand in the marketplace and sell into that demand with your own product or service or the products of others (so you become their affiliate).

Finding or creating a simple problem-solving solution is a much easier task than learning to drive mega traffic (which will require capital).

      Just my opinion ...

I do have a small budget if that helps. I was only looking at the cheap go daddy hosting as it seems to offer everything i would want to begin with. What more would i need than wordpress hosting and a domain?

Like you say, adsense and amazon dont give you masses of return so i wouldnt want to invest too much. The budget is there though...

Ive also thought about maybe starting two seperate sites....One which is a blog that goes along with my youtube channel and another which just features the how to guides and videos that i write. Is it better to seperate them out? I could then give the how to blog a more descriptive title. Like HowTo.com instead of zimpaz.com for example

if i were in your shoes i would start a branded twitter, facebook, and instagram account. remember to use lots of hashtags in your posts. then i would build my own site. i would recommend you use wistia for video hosting. i would record my videos and edit them. i would use wistia to host the complete video on my site and i would post the edited video on youtube. I would then tell people at the end of the video on youtube that you have a video that dives into more detail at your site. make sure you put a lead capture system in place. when people go see the video at your site you capture their emails, and then promote products to them. it will take some time but you could build a big business this way specially if you make your videos entertaining. dont forget to sell them branded products. just my 2 cents.

Your getting decent traffic but can build on that traffic by adding more videos.

If it's more income that you are after, then why not send all your youtube traffic to a squeeze page, capture leads and send info and affiliate products to them that match your niche?

Youtube is pretty easy to rank with because it is owned by Google (Plus it will get a lot more initial traffic than your brand new blog).

Having a blog is a way to build 'credibility' and you are already doing that with your videos. Making videos is a lot more transparent than just writing. I would make videos myself but have found that writing is my 'strongest' marketing method.

Always pick the method of marketing that matches your best form of communication. This is very important.

Youtube ads on your channel used to be a good money making idea in the past but nowadays so many people have ad blockers that are even blocking ads on youtube.

Adsense income was really good before but for me I find that they are not as targeted as in the past.

If you don't want the hassle of starting a blog or trying to build it, you might just use your Facebook page or Google+ page for this purpose. At least, you would have a built in audience on either site that would want to see what you have to offer, via the groups and other pages.

Thanks for all the Tips and advise guys, I really appreciate it. Seems like this forum was a good discovery!

I have a wordpress site and domain that i have until december next year so i think i will start by setting that up as a complimentary blog to go along with my youtube. Can anyone recommend a wordpress plugin for capturing emails when people signup? I guess i need an incentive though...

Would i use this blog as a link in the video description instead of a direct link to the amazon affiliate page for the product?

Hey zimpaz, I say go for the blog. Create a tech blog my friend. You don't need to create separate blogs just create categories within the blog. One for reviews, one for the tutorials and add other categories like latest tech news.

To make sure you're always ahead of the competition on the latest gadgets and news simply go to: news.google.com and type "announced" (with quotes) you'll find a lot of gadgets that were just released. These are future keywords my friend. You're in a good niche and a blog will do wonders for you.

I also recommend you to check out Marques' channel for inspiration, he's making a killing in the tech niche with amazon https://youtube.com/user/marquesbrownlee

Marques was the one that gave me the confidence to include affiliate links in my videos. I had read before that youtube dont like it, but he and many others seem to do it without a problem.

Blog started! Zimpaz.com. Just a basic theme at the moment but i will add some email capture before i start linking to it on my videos.

Even though your viewing figures are small, the traffic is targeted and you are making sales..so, why not channel it to your website that gives people more buying options? You could set up review sites in specific niches and even have adsense on them (along with your regular affiliate links).

Yes, go ahead and create a blog, it's a good way to build authority and credibility. When you upload a video on Youtube, make a blog post about it and embed the video in the post. You can utilize the "external annotations" feature of Youtube to direct your video viewers to your blog posts.

That is across about 40 videos....and most of the views come from 4 or 5 videos. Its always the random ones that seem to get most views...i can never predict it!
