Generically it is called a catfish ad. I think there is a WP plugin for it but I don't use it

You know I thought it was awesome the first time I saw it...

And so I sent a lot of traffic from my list about it, but no sales. Wondering how others are doing with it?

This "amazing" product didn't work at all for me ! I've been getting a lot more subscriptions to my mail list with a basic get response pop up than with this product...

        Cheers, Samuel.

    Hi

Ultimate Footer Ad is really designed as a less obtrusive and annoying lead capture system to popups and hover boxes. So it doesn't really surprise me if it doesn't convert as well as a popup. Where it excels is on blogs, ecommerce and other content sites where you don't want to annoy your visitors but still capture their attention and details. In those situations it should outperform the sidebar optin forms handsomely.

The other unique feature is the ability to split test multiple ads or just rotate them. It's very controllable so you can just show the ad on the first visit or every X visits etc.

@RMC - I'm sorry to hear UFA didn't generate any sales for you. Maybe it just didn't fit your audience. I'm surprised as it's been converting really well. We reached the 750 sales milestone today since it launched in mid March.

I have thought about using this kind of lead capture but would really like to know what kind of success people are having with it compared to regular sidebar opt-in boxes.

If anybody has done any testing on this please post.

Maybe because catfish are bottom feeders?

I am not 100% sure but I think the naming trend began with Suckerfish dropdown menus (2003).

The Catfish is a CSS/JavaScript combination which utilizes CSS absolute placement, I think it was originally named by Sitepoint - see The Catfish - Part 1 (2005)

There is also a simple but free Catfish Ad Plugin for Wordpress.
