this is probably a stupid question. Whats the difference between article directories and directories?

they are the same right ?

Not necessarily. If you just say directory, you are usually talking about a link directory, not an article directory.

Nope, not the same.

An article directory is a directory of articles organised according to topics.

A directory (when spoken of in the world of IM) generally refers to a directory of links (to websites) organised according to categories.

An article directory is a place where you have many articles from the owner himself or maybe other article marketers have written these articles and submitted it themselves just like you have people submitting their articles at Ezinearticles.com

A directory can be on any topic. If you would sell guitar lessons on your site, you can call it GUITAR DIRECTORY.

Both genres can be general, like the examples, or very subject-specific...

Directory normally refers to a site which has a big collection of Links or URL organized into various topics or categories.

Article Directory is website which has collection of articles organized into various topics. For example: ezinearticles.com

There are many different kinds of directories..

* Web directories - Collection of links under specific topics - based on something similar to search engines
* Search Directories - Search Engines
* Business Directory - Actual business listings
* Links Directory - Collection of website links (may or may not be sorted in topics)
* Blog Directory - Collection of blog links
* Article Directory - Collection of articles posted by authors
