Alexa Votes Me The 6th Hottest Guy on the Internet

This sounds like the beginning of a joke, but it actually isn't. Currently as I write this, Alexa says that my site (alright, not me) is number six across the internet in terms of traffic over a 5 minute period.

Yeah, it's pretty cool, but has also made me think about how true this ranking really is:

- Although I am getting a lot of traffic, in truth, it is far less than you may think.

- Due to being on that page, I am not getting a lot of referral traffic from that page. I would think that the further up you get, the more viral traffic that you do get

- Alexa is strongly skewed towards the internet marketing crowd. This is because it is a lot more likely that Internet Marketers have the tool bar installed than the average person. A couple of my sites receive 10s of thousands of visitors a day, but because of their niche barely hit the top 50k some months.

- Apart from the ego and my wife quite liking being with the 6th hottest guy on the internet is there actually any advantage of having a high alexa ranking?

Anyway, those are my thoughts. What are yours?!

Any FREE traffic is GOOD traffic even if it is not that much.

You should feel proud by having your site on the HOT URL's section.

I pretty much stopped reading when I saw "Alexa". I wouldn't really judge a sites traffic based off of what Alexa claims, since it's alot of inaccurate stuff.

Yeah, it is inaccurate and can easily be manipulated. However, since it has become the "industry's standard" - What Can We Do About It?

Alexa traffic stats means nothing, they are 100% wrong is many cases and the fact that no stats websites including compete.com can not access your server not one of them will ever be able to report on actual traffic.

A stats program must have access to your server in order to properly configure your site for proper stats.

And this is why I only trust Awstats in my cPanel for the most accurate results.

There's nothing wrong with patting yourself on the back!

And #6...well you must be doing something right.

And to tell you the truth, I still look at a sites Alexa Ranking
before I buy...maybe out of habit...but there's a little something
in me that wants to know I'm getting something that is considered
popular...

You make me smile too, since my Awstats is more accurate than any stat tracking program out there since it doesn't use Javascript nor does it require a toolbar.

That's it. The truth is that using traffic as a site metric affecting rankings is hardly achievable - measuring hard, manipulating easy, privacy big question.
