The problem has always been bandwidth. And with broadband ISP's now putting caps on bandwidth, that problem isn't going away. Originally, Java was supposed to be run from Java Servers, and the desktop users accessed those with Java Stations. That ran slow, so it never really took off. If I read my tea leaves right, Google will run into exactly the same problem. And it's why it will fall on it's face. You heard it here first.

The Chrome browser totally revolutionized browsing and marketing, so this will likely have the same impact. </sarcasm>

I think Microsoft's newest OS coming out in October will be fantastic. I think they learned a shocking lesson from Vista. Google will have an uphill battle.

It is for netbook. In order to compete with windows, it will have to have many similar web app which can be used on netbook. It will take many years even MS stop making progress. david |

| I agree! The more the public pits them against each other, and the more they fight amongst themselves, the better for us, the end users. ![]() Reminds me of the GUI wars between Apple and Microsoft back in the 80's. Apple sued Windows for copyright infringement, then Xerox stepped in and sued Apple for stealing the idea from them, where the GUI interface was originally developed. Source Capitalism Rocks! I don't know if Google can keep up with Microsoft when it comes to OS? But they sure are getting serious about this stuff. Well, I am just hoping for the best. Whoever OS runs best wins.

Lets not forget, if the OS does take off, microsoft will use the code, make changes or even better it, close the code off and capture a big part of the market again through its already established channels. Google is pissing in the wind, I really thought they would be smarter than this. |

I don't think its the beginning of the end, but I do think it will help to force Microsoft to put more consideration into its platforms stability and bugs. If it helps to make windows a more stable platform or a better one comes along its a win win situation.

Apple would've went bankrupt 15 years ago if Microsoft didn't rescue them. Google is a house of cards built on search advertising. It's the single source of revenue that funds all their other negative income services. And it can be attacked from so many directions, some new company will find a way to change online advertising eventually. Microsoft made $60 billion last year despite Vista's weak adoption rate. It'll be even higher next year because of Win7. Surprised we're still talking about a piece of vaporware here. There is no ChromeOS, just a press release; real Google products don't get announced a year in advance, we see them when they're out there, and they sink or swim on their own merits. |

Google getting into bed with China in advance of last year's Olympics tells us what we need to know about where their priorities lie. Money before morality. But wasn't it always so with any major corporation? That 'Don't be evil' line really worries me. Surely better to aspire to BE something, not to NOT BE something. That said, I'm like the monkey with his hand in the jar with Google, love Google products and services and I can't seem to let go! Anyone know how to go cold turkey on giving up Google? I've fully forsaken Microsoft (thank you Vista, you drove me to the Mac, and I'm never going back). A bit like Bush and Obama when you think about it. Sometimes maybe something's got to get really really bad before it drives you to find something really really good! |

yeah it's all fun and games, but no win software will run on the google os. There are many excellent OS out there already, the problem is with windows apps most people can't live without. Chris |

We'll just have to wait and see, won't we. I suspect that it'll take some time to dethrone MS, if that ever occurs.

Anyway, just like you eluded to, fear is likely going to keep most people from trying Linux. Without a wide spread educational effort, I don't see Linux really taking hold.

As long as end-users aren't directly paying for their operating system, there's no reason to put in extra effort to obtain any OS when the computer comes with one. 92% of people don't even know what a browser is, can you imagine explaining exactly what an OS is, then having them figure out Linux? Windows isn't going anywhere. Windows 7 will be to Vista what XP was to ME; it will wipe out the past and resolidify the brand. They'll be stronger next year than last. |

Overall, saying that Google will replace MS is a wishful thinking, and a wishful thinking of those who don't know what do they really wish for. But again, for many people that's a religious thing.

No. I've worked in tech for 15+ years, and Windows is MORE than safe on the desktop, and even in many server side areas. I am looking forward to Google's Linux based OS, but it is NOT going to supplant Windows. remember that Windows has a HUGE base of available software and most companies build for Windows. We don't even know yet what it will take to port famous apps to Chrome or if most companies would want to. I guess titles mentioning the beginning of the end for Windows will get many views, but I came here to just say, "no". BTW I worked much of my time as a UNIX and Linux admin, so I know Linux and UNIX and I have had my issues with Windows going way back to the instability of NT4 and especially the SP2 nightmare that wiped out many systems. |

I recently finished a web site rewrite project for a medium-sized company owned by a billionaire (yes, really - the guy's got oil). The ad agency that redesigned their web site was (secretly) not going to give them a CMS. They hadn't even mentioned a CMS - and this is a site that will need frequent in-house updating. Until I brought it up, no one on the client side realized that they weren't going to have a CMS. Reason? 35 years on the job, and the guy in charge of the web site project didn't know what a CMS is. And he's supposed to be their computer "expert". He didn't know what HTML is, either. I kid you not. Most of the small businesses I talk to don't even know what an ISP is. Much less an "open source OS". Chrome OS is not going to take Microsoft down anytime soon. More's the pity.

Google will most likely have a cult following but there's no way it'll knock MS off. Although, I do feel it will take a big enough chunk out of MS's market to unnerve them. |

If it seamlessly runs Windows business apps it's got a chance. That's why all other competing OSes (OS2, Linux, Mac, etc.) to unseat Microsoft. Businesses want an easy to install, easy to use, networking OS that runs their favorite programs. It definitely is the beginning of an interesting battle. Ralph |
