VPS vs. Dedicated vs. Managed

Hey guys,

Trying to figure this out so I thought I'd just get your advice on it.

What is the difference between VPS, Dedicated and Managed hosting?

I know that Dedicated is more powerful than VPS in most cases, but what about Managed? Is Managed an alternative to Dedicated and/or VPS?

Thanks for the help!

managed just means that you're the one managing the server.... installing scripts and making sure everything works right and all that... it's for advanced users..

      It's actually the opposite....

Managed means THEY (the company) will manage the vast majority of things related to the server including initial setup.

To the OP, if you're going managed VPS or dedicated, take a look at WiredTree. Their support is awesome and they manage EVERYTHING.

I think you meant unmanaged, right?

But the point is that you can get managed or unmanaged shared hosting; a managed or unmanaged VPS; or a managed or unmanaged dedicated server.

Also, don't assume that dedicated is better performing than a VPS or that a VPS is better performing than a shared host. That may have been generally the case once, but with all the new "cloud" offerings such as Rackspace Sites (which is most similar to a premium shared service) or Amazon EC2 (which is essentially a VPS) that's far from from always true now.

Where do you get all this stuff from, that you post here, Peter? It actually means exactly the opposite. It means that the server is managed for you, and that you're therefore not the one doing it.

I'm honestly thinking about using WPEngine.

    Anyone have experience with them?

A cheap vps can be super fast. But you need to know what you're doing. If you don't it will be hacked.

Most vps and dedicated have the managed option. If you don't know how to manage a server get a cheap vps and learn or learn on your local computer. Or go with the managed option. You can get a vps from digitalocean.com for $5 or from Linode.com for $10. You can also get a vps and pay someone to configure it.

In my experience, a VPS has always been faster than shared hosting. You can install what you want, configure it how you want and know exactly whats going on with it. You get a set amount of resources. With shared, you have to share your resources with neighbors with can slow everything down from page load to mysql.

Never had the need for dedicated.

I would suggest to get Managed VPS rather than Dedicated unless you know already how to configure your server afterward.

Well it really depends on your needs, how much traffic you expect and whether or not you're offering downloads or video streaming etc.

But for a regular site with medium traffic a VPS should definately be enough, and you'll save a lot of money too if you don't really need a dedicated server.

I think a dedicated server is better than a VPS. You will have better experience. If you don't use that high configuration, a VPS is also a good choice. You can choose managed one as well if you don't know how to manage it. It's safe.

This isn't entirely true as it depends on the underlying hardware. For example, a virtual server (VPS) running on a host node with multiple, multi-core processors is going to be much more powerful than the average "dedicated" server.

Many companies don't provision directly to the hardware anymore due to a few specific reasons, one of which being recoverability & portability.

I would recommend heading over to WebHostingTalk - Web Hosting Talk - The largest, most influential web hosting community on the Internet - you'll more than likely get more accurate information there.

As for managed, this isn't anything specific to virtual or dedicated servers. This is the management type provided:

self managed: you manage, secure & maintain the server

managed: typically the host will provide updates, tech support etc - always check the support scope of the host in question.
