What's the best FREE membership site builder or Wordpress plugin for site?

I am seriously thinking about starting a major membership site...My question is though, does anyone have experience with a great site builder or a wordpress plugin that might just do the trick for a beginner with a membership site??

It there anything that is free or comparable or at least cheap and gets the work done for a full on membership site??

Thanks!

I have a free software I can give you to start a membership site. Basically what it does is create a password protected directory in your domain.

You can use anything to build your membership site. But I recommend wordpress... I just get a good theme for my membership site and wala, a membership site up within a day. So you can put the site in the directory: www.yourdomain.com/members.

Then, what you do is have a teaser site at the main directory, www.yourdomain.com. It is basically the same as the membership site but the content is parsed. At the end of each content piece you will have a link that says, "To view the full article, click here."

And that link will lead visitors to a sign-up page where you make your pitch to get them to sign up. You can make it a free membership or paid membership... up to you.

Key Tip: If you make it free membership, give a valid good reason why signing up is necessary. A simple reason as wanting to manage spam in the site is good enough. Of course, if it is a paid membership, all fundamentals of business applies.

And then, here's where the software comes in. It manages the sign up process where visitors can set their own username and password. And once they sign up, they will be given access to the membership site where all your content is. You can use Paypal even for paid memberships.

The only expenditure is on hosting and domain name. A great way to bootstrap a membership site if you ask me.

Wordpress is an easy way to start a membership site. I'm not sure if there are any free plugins for it. But one that I've been using for my clients is Wishlist Member. It's pretty good. It integrates with PayPal. You can select which content you'd like to protect of just set it to protect everything after the "more" tag.

Another way is to use Joomla (Joomla!). Joomla has a steeper learning curve than WordPress but it has a free membership module (Account Expiration Control - Membership Manager - Joomla! Extensions Directory).

    Hope that helps.
