Default CD Baby Afflilate program Bites the Dust, leaving affiliates hanging -UPDATE FROM CD BABY

Without any notice, CD Baby's affiliate program log in and site are gone.

There is no way to know how many others are left hanging, but its a good example that with affiliate programs you don't have a real partnership.

To think of yourself, or site as anything other than an "at will" commissioned sales person, you may find out differently.

I agree completely. People often become so reliant on money making affiliate systems that they take a lot for granted. You should always keep in mind that things like this happen, especially in this economy.

That being said, they should have given out some warning that they were in trouble, and getting ready to close, that way affiliates could get their things in order, and scale back spending and advertising efforts.

This is why I greatly diversify my affiliate efforts. That way, if one program
shuts down, it doesn't affect me too much.

I currently promote somewhere between 20 and 30 different products as an
affiliate in a wide variety of niches.

It keeps me from worrying about things like this.

Also - using a forwarding - or rerouting script is also a smart thing to do when using affliate links. That way you don't have to go back and change every link.

The Sad Part is there are (I should now say were) many bands and artists that were making music sales from music related websites and forums.

Payout problems with iTunes and low payouts from amazon will make the music niche very unattractive.

It will also add an additional burden to artists and groups who now will have to sell their music themselves.

CD baby still exists, just the affiliate side is gone. Luckily for CD Baby, all the affiliate links still direct traffic to the proper artists - albums.

UPDATE From CD Baby Twitter stream....

@kccaferadio The affiliate program is not gone! The login page is down, but you will still get paid for sales through your affiliate links.

Twitters a powerful tool for instant information especially on #MusicMonday

Its like the saying you never put all your eggs in one basket. You should never rely one one place for your income.

having lots of sources of income will mean that you will never put yourself in that position.

kind regards

Mark,

There was a planned downtime of CD Baby for yesterday to make some important changes to their shopping cart for artists. They informed artists but maybe forgot to tell affiliates.
