Should I create lead generation sites, or local paid niche directories

I am very good at doing keyword research, and can rank local niche websites fast with very little work. I have just started creating a couple of lead generation sites, and within a couple of days I have them all ranking with hardly any content.

My question is for you people out there who already have experience with these types of websites. Do you think it will be more profitable to create lead gen sites that charge per call, or create niche based local directories and charge monthly for listings?

I am going to try out both methods for myself to see what works best, but I would love some input from people who have already tried these methods themselves.

When creating the directories, I will use EMD's and only create niche specific directories. An example would be a directory for plumbers in Dallas, or lawyers in Toronto. I would then contact a few businesses offering free listings to get the site populated, and then start promoting my paid listings options after I got some content on the site.

For the lead gen sites I also use EMD's, and create a Youtube video promoting the service my website is about. I then put up a phone number that redirects to a business every time somebody calls it.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Hello.
I am in the US and I want to also start a Lead Generation site, I was thinking of targeting insurance of all kinds. Sounds like you know more than I do I am learning.
Let me know if you have any ideas in how we could possibly partner up.I am not good at technical things, I have a sales background and I am good at talking with people and writing.
Just thought I would throw it out there, as I am trying to figure out where to start.
    Thanks
    Susie

Good question. Testing might be your best answer, but I don't see why you can't do both if you really wanted. If you had to choose ONE, collecting leads seems like a better deal for you if you're going after higher end service niches like DUI lawyers, cosmetic surgery specialists, root canal dentists, etc. You could set up an automatic text message to them when the lead opts in so they can follow up immediately. You might have to send them a couple dozen free leads first before they catch on and realize exactly how much it's worth to them. "Hey, your free trial is up and I need to give another dentist a trial until I find the right partnership. How'd the leads work out for you?"

I have built a few lead gen sites, got them ranked for local keywords. The phone was ringing constantly but nobody wanted to buy the calls I even give them away for a limited time so they could see the value, but the attitude of "im not paying for work" seems quite rife here in the UK.

I am going to try a directory instead....
